Problem: Canon 70d and Flash Yongnuo 560 IV

Hi, everyone. I'm new here and I wanted to ask you guys if somebody can help me. I've just bought a Yongnuo 560 IV Flash (It's just like the 560 III) and when I want to use it on the camera, it doesn't work. However, whenever I use S1 mode, it works, but in M mode it doesn't work. Does anyone know something?
PLEASE, HELP ME. I'm kind of newbie

    Hi Marcel(?),

Welcome to the CiC forums - and please don't worry about being a newbie - we all were once.

Personally I can't help you, as I don't do much flash and have neither Canon nor Yongnuo equipment - I just thought I'd say "Hi"

That's a good thread title to attract replies, and posted in the correct forum, so not withstanding the special nature of today for many people, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I will respond fairly soon.

Could you do us a favour please?
Could you click Settings (right at the top),
    then Edit Profile (on left)
and put your first name in the Real Name field
and where you are (roughly) in the Location field?
this helps everyone give you more personal and relevant answers - thanks.

    Seasonal greeetings from Dave.

Hi Marcel(?). Have you read the flash manual yet? That might be a good place to start. I downloaded it, as I don't know the unit, and it does seem to be a bit of a strange beast. It seems to be a more or less manual flash with built in radio trigger, and it can be configured in either Master or Slave mode. It seems to be designed for use in a multiple flash configuration; this is not what I would consider to be a "newbie" workflow.

My guess is that you have it set up as a slave, and it will not fire (even when sitting on the camera's hotshoe) unless it is told to do so by another similar unit that has been set to "Master". I would suggest familiarizing yourself with the units settings and controls by going through your manual.

Good. Manfred posted while I was investigating manuals!

I don’t use any Yongnou stuff but I’ll make a preliminary suggestion Marcel(?) based on what I was able to find of the 560. I couldn’t download the 560IV manual. So it’s entirely possible I’m way off here. Manfred has a good suggestion as well.

Have you tried setting the flash to “manual” or “M” mode through the camera’s menu and disabling the camera’s “wireless” mode? Remember to mount the flash and turn it on before you start setting the camera’s menu so they can communicate together.

From what I’m getting here the S1/S2 settings on the flash are for use of manual/TTL metering. So if your camera is set to fire the flash in a TTL metering mode instead of manual, it stands to reason the flash may not respond when the flash is set in manual mode.

The information can be reviewed if you refer to page 199 of the EOS 70D user manual entitled External Flash Function Settings. To find where the menu items on the camera are located refer to page 195 entitled Setting the Flash. You would be looking to access the menu item “External Flash func. setting”.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help but please do post back if you don’t have any luck.

The YN-560IV should work like the YN-560III on the hotshoe--make sure that the flash is out of any slave modes, though, when you mount it onto the camera. S1/S2 tells the flash to stop "listening" to its foot and to listen to the sensor panel instead. Obviously, you won't have menu control, TTL, HSS, etc. etc. since, like the YN-560III, the IV is also a manual-only flash and only has the sync pin. If you wanted something more similar to a 430EXII/580EXII on the hotshoe, I'd recommend returning the 560 and looking at the Yongnuo 500EX, 565EX or 568EX models (or better yet, a used 430EX or 580EX).

Terry's post is spot on with the wireless optical slave modes.

If you're trying to trigger the flash off-camera with the 70D's pop-up flash, what mode the camera is in doesn't so much matter as what mode the camera's pop-up flash is in.

Use S1 on the YN-560IV if the pop-up flash is in M. (i.e., no preflashes)
Use S2 on the YN-560IV if the pop-up flash is in eTTL. (i.e., gives a single preflash)

Make sure the pop-up flash is OUT of "Wireless" mode--that gives multiple pre-flashes (kinda like Morse code) to signal the full hotshoe communication. You'd only use the pop-up flash in Wireless mode if you had a Yongnuo "EX" speedlight in "Sc" slave mode (i.e., Canon wireless eTTL slave). There's also an "Sn" mode for Nikon CLS wireless signaling. My for-Canon YN-568EX has all four slave modes.

Ideally, what you may want to consider, is getting a YN-560-TX transmitter for the 70D's hotshoe (instead of using the pop-up flash), which then frees you from the optical "line of sight" and range restrictions by using radio instead to trigger the off-camera flash. The YN-560III and YN-560IV can have their zoom and power controlled from the YN-560-TX.
