    Rideau Street Convent Chapel

The Rideau St Convent, in Ottawa was closed in 1972 and was torn down. Fortunately, the chapel was carefully taken apart and put into storage. It was reassembled inside the National Gallery of Canada in 1988.

We were at the gallery today to visit the M C Escher exhibition (the gallery has one of the largest collections of Escher's works in the world, and there is a special exhibit there right now that runs until early May), so I took some shots of the gallery interior, including the beautiful chapel.

I shot this with the D800 and the f/3.5 24mm PC-E lens and used the built-in electronic level to align the shot properly. It is a handheld shot so, so the verticals are close, but not perfect.

Excellent shot as usual coming from you, Manfred. I particularly like the second to the last shot plus #1 of course...the details are amazing. I can't wait to shoot with the D810 when I get it at the end of the month...

I like the geometric, abstract nature of the second photo.

That should be exciting! Once you get used to it, you'll be amazed at how much easier it is to shoot that the amateur gear.

Honestly, the only reason I don't use my D800 100% of the time are the size and weight. Sometimes that is a consideration...

Are you getting any other accessories or lenses to go along with it?

Manfred, are you suggesting that her current batch of lenses might not be up to par for more MP?

    Just a question to her.

I knew I was going to go with a FF camera and started accumulating high end glass a few years before I went to the D800, and in the end it was certainly the right choice for me. I do a fair number of large size prints, so even without pixel peeping, there is a noticeable improvement in image quality from the larger, high resolution sensor in my prints.

Part of the reason I went FF was for the shallower DoF capability, so I often shoot wide open on f/2.8 or faster glass to take advantage of those capabilities. So I knew I wanted the fast glass. I had the f/2.8 24-70mm, the f/2.8 70-200mm, the f/2 105mm and the f/1.8 50mm lenses before I went to the D800. I've picked up the f/2.8 14-24mm and the f/3.5 24mm PC-E lenses later on.

I also stocked up with CF memory cards and a spare battery when I bought the camera (even though it can take SD cards). I also got a battery grip (I do a lot of portrait orientation shots, rather than landscape, I found the battery grip was really a great investment for my shooting needs).

I expect that if Canon comes out with the rumoured 50MP camera, they are likely to come out with some high resolution lenses to get the best out of all of those additional MP.

Considering the massive variation between the light of the lights and the dark shadows I think the overall exposure is about spot on and it is well rendered

    Re: Rideau Street Convent Chapel

Thanks Jeremy - this was definitely a PITA place to shoot.

Major art gallery = no large bags allowed, so I had decide on a single lens and camera combination. Simply no way to carry more gear in and get away with it; a tripod or even a monopod would have been nice, but definitely not permitted. I figured a PC-E lens would probably be the most appropriate choice, given the type of shooting I was planning to do.

The second issue was that being an art gallery, the lights were way down low, so high ISO (6400, 4000 for the ceiling shot) to get even close to a decent shutter speed and aperture setting.

Third issue - holiday weekend. We had hoped that people would stay away but no such luck. It was one of those hang around waiting for people to move type of shoots.

    Re: Rideau Street Convent Chapel

I have a D800e, Manfred and never really did something about accessories with it because it was too heavy for my little hands and wrist. So I bought the D810 and yes, I am looking for lenses now that will suit it for general photography mainly landscape and taking photos of my little granddaughter and another for when we go to Healesville Reserves and Werribee Open Range Zoo. I am going in February so I needed those three lenses badly. I would like to get something flexible for the trip, perhaps a zoom lens will be appropriate? And I already have a 50mm but I am not happy with it, so I might buy a 35mm instead...Thanks for asking. My mistake was that I bought the D800e online on a whim and did not get to test it in my hands unlike the D810 where I got to hold it first before I bought it. Unfortunately the store do not have it on stock at the time so I have to order it to get one straight from the factory.

I have taken note of your glass here and see if I can afford it after getting carried away with the grip and the 64gb card, extra battery and charger, etc...

Thanks again Manfred...your posts have always been a big help to me (all of us!)

    Re: Rideau Street Convent Chapel

I do about 55% of my shooting with the f/2.8 24-70 Nikkor; that covers most of my landscape / cityscape work and some of my portraiture work. The f/2.8 70-200 Nikkor gets around 40% of my shooting; it is my go-to lens for portraiture and headshots. The other glass does the rest of the work; primarily the f/2.8 14-24 for ultra-wide angle stuff, the f/3.5 24mm PC-E for buildings and architecture and the f/2 105 DC, which is my other portraiture lens. I also have a 50mm that I hardly ever use and the 80-400mm that comes along for wildlife shooting trips.

I rarely remove the battery grip.

All my other lenses are DX ones.

The D800(e) and D810 seem to use the same body casting. I find it interesting that one feels good in your hands while the other doesn't.

I do not know either...if you do not mind me comparing this to my handguns, I used to have a Glock 40 caliber which I bought because it was the gun of the year talk of the town one. I love it so much I bought another one, a Gen 4. I got rid of the Gen 4 because of the same reason, too heavy for my hand. I can only fire a 15 round and I will be in pain and making excuses why I do not want to practice shooting anymore.

Back to the camera I do not think I will be using the grip even. I just want one if I need it. Doubt if I will though...Perhaps on a tripod...hubby was paying for so I bite. The rest of the other stuffs including the camera are on my pocketbook. So how can I refuse?
