    A simple tree

Here is a simple pic that I took today. I thought it turned out not too bad but your comments
    and critiques are most welcome.
Originally there was a bit more room around the tree but when I straightened the image it came
    closer to the side.
The image was taken at 47mm, f4, SS 1/1000. I went for the higher shutter speed because it was really
    windy out.

You were very lucky to be able to get enough of the tree within your final composition. Nice capture.

Hi Rita, this give a nice feeling of 'being there' and wanting to walk around a bit and take in the view!

Images with beaches/shorelines in them are difficult to get exactly straight, because, though it might seem it should be, the beach/shoreline is not a reliable reference for levelness because it is a curving line often. With an image like yours, I wouldn't necessarily think that the straightness could be judged by the shoreline. So using a tripod or on-camera level is very useful in this case. Possibly the image is a little tilted to the left? I like the mountains. Must view it at large size to appreciate them.

I like this a lot but then I am very partial to pictures of trees. It looks level as far as one can tell. As Nick says, the mountains make a good backdrop.

    Thank you John & Frank.

Frank, this was indeed a beautiful place. It was my first visit here and I didn't have a lot of time but I will be going back to try and capture more of the view.

Nick, thank you for your feedback. When I straightened I tried to use the sidewalk as it appeared to be quit level in reality. However, because the tree really was tilted I did find it interesting to judge wether the image was really straight or not.

    Tony, thank you.

    Re: A simple tree

I watched the image as it downloaded and thought what a beautiful summer's day. Then I read where you said it was windy, and I looked again and saw the snow on the mountains, and thought what a beautiful winter's day. Apparently the weather here influences my perception of the weather in landscapes.

FWIW, I find it difficult to obtain a level horizon any time, and I think that is made more difficult when you are dealing with a subject that is naturally leaning to one side.

My first thought at seeing this place for the first time (in reality I mean...) would be "What a beautiful place!" then go around and look at everything and decided that everything seems to be in the way, start going away only to turn and take a shot. And this is how it will turn out...as you took it. Rita, I AM that crazy of a woman!!!

Greg, yes I find seeing this straight is something of a challenge. Hey, maybe I am the one that is lopsided

Izzie, were you hanging around in the bushes watching me?

I am a tree lover as well! I especially like them when winter's cold has stripped them bare. I am always looking for the lone PERFECT tree. There is something fascinating about them. So unique like snowflakes in that not a single one will ever be the same. Nice shot.

Lovely winter light. Like Barbara, I find that trees often beg to be imaged... you have done this one justice. I don't sense a problem with the vertical/horizontal in this. Sometimes, it seems to me that what looks best in that regard is what settles the eye and yet is not quite what is geometrically correct.
