    Same Tree, Different Times

This is one of my favourite mangrove trees that I often go back to so that I can catch it in different light, different tides and different weather conditions.

#1 On a reasonably calm overcast day at high tide. NDx400 filter, 5 second exposure.

#2 At night under a full moon at high tide. 2 minute exposure.

#3 At night, low tide, light painting, 42 second exposure.

#4 Sunset, low tide, 15 second exposure.

Nice set, Graham. I like the subdued palette of the first one. The soft reflection on silky water gives it a very serene feeling.

Just a thought: have considered positioning the tree off-centre?

Brilliant set - keep them coming and don't change your central composition as it works perfectly.

That's a very nice concept and they are all beautiful pictures by themselves.

Very nice set Graham, I can see the attraction with this single tree.

I'm wondering how it would look if you could get a lower viewpoint, if possible? Low tide and right hour of the day

For No 3 what did use use for the light source, I have a tree here close by in the water similar to this but have not considered light painting yet.

An interesting series, Graham. I definitely prefer #1, probably because the background is simpler and the crop is tigher. You use a similar crop in the night shot, but I just don't like the image as much.

I can't help but wonder how the image might look had you not centred the tree quite as much and left a bit of negative space (likely on the right hand side of the image)

Thanks for the comments everyone. These shots have been taken over a 2 year period. The earliest (#2) was taken in April 2012 and the latest #1 just yesterday.

I have but it just seems a better subject when it's central. The negative space just didn't do much for me even though I am a bit of a rule of thirds composer.

I just used a 3 x D cell maglight torch but any decent flashlight would work although it doesn't need to be too powerful unless the subject is a long way off.
