    Use of Grain

It was a greyish end to the day and the subject was shades of white and black in the main and so I pushed the ISO to 1000 to get a 'feel' to the shot

    Use of Grain

    as always C & C welcome

Evokes an almost eerie feel with the shadowy trees in the background.

Nice image Mark I agree with Barbara about the shadowy trees. May I ask why you preferred such a tight crop ? Nothing interesting to add to the composition ?

    Thanks Binnur, Vaez,

Binnur, yes the rest of the shot was the plain grey sky and the bottom of the treeline, I also felt the long thin crop emphasised the wings and the 'flow' of the bird

Good plan, Mark. Noise adds a bit of grittiness that can add to the composition.

This technique has been used since the film days, often in action / sports images so we subconciously equate this with motion and speed. Not a bad thing when it deals with a bird in flight.

I find can be a bit more difficult in digital work as the digital noise can be distracting because it is coloured, especially in dark areas of the image. I will sometimes convert my images to monochrome to make them look better. In low ISO shots, I will sometimes add monochrome digital noise in PP to give an image a bit more grittiness.

Regardless, it works really well in this image. Nicely done!
