Oh! that is the safety net...I was about to ask what that line was...it was more pronounced in B/W version without going through Lytebox. I like the coloured version though on the first installment here. These action shots you've captured in both are at it! The B/W more so. It has that "Here! take that!" feeling...all very nice...(what is better than just saying "nice"?) Excellent capture!!!

Id love to give sports a go. one of my project 52 themes maybe? but im already thinking of giving that up!
    Mark,

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Agree with your suggestions about getting closer. Don't give up on the sports idea; I created a list of potential sports themes' now just a matter of getting there.

To be honest John, I don't mind the safety net, maybe coming from a sports background, I'm used to seeing all these bits & pieces.
I like the BW from this set, the grittiness of this game to me tends to lend itself to a BW perhaps even lower vibrancy processing.
My thought is suggestion would be to follow up on the already suggested idea of being behind the goal, but I would add the idea of being at ground level, but with a very wide angle even fish eye lens. I think then the safety net would be part of the scene.
Either that or put the extender on & go for as tight as you can reach on their faces..sort of either extreme, if that makes sense.
Of the 2 I think a confined small stadium indoors, the wide angle with other players (& crowd) in the background of the scene, would work best. (She says never having even seen a game in this sport, but I'm comparing arenas of competition, for which I hope you'll forgive my ignorance of ice hockey)

    Hi Kay,

Appreciate the comments and suggestions. As I was shooting, I tried to follow the traditional sports photography trends (capturing the action and having the ball (puck) within the shot) and found following the play very difficult. Just keeping up with where the puck was created a challenge, televised games usually highlight the puck, no such guide in the actual arena. Then I felt that including the net was a necessity, shooting behind the net would be a great advantage.

Shoot wider and crop until you get the hang?

Agree with your comments, only problem is these were shot in an NHL arena, these particular players were part of the special events for prizes. Arena rules state that photographers must shoot from their seats and are not allowed to use the mouse holes. May have to find an amateur league to get better access to the action.
