    2015 Project 52 - 1st quarter - Kaye Leggett

I am in the very fortunate position to be on sabbatical for 2015 and with my Husband will be travelling for much of the year, mainly with our motorhome. So I want to use this project to improve my travel photography and also to form a base for the photobook I want to put together when the year is out.

I want to record where I've been but with more than a snap shot. And also to continue to develop images of the little things in life that sometimes go un-noticed.

Sometimes my posts may be late, depending on what access I have to the internet, but they will be there !!

    Week 1
A few days at the seaside - mainly beautiful weather (unusual!) and everyone was out enjoying themselves.

The first - where I was - if I could, I would award prizes if you know where this is...

And a sample of those enjoying, all in their own way

This shot is a couple of days later, the sun had gone in and the wind was up, but life by the sea continues.....

And then a quirky shot, just because I liked the composition

Phew - I found this task hard i.e. to put together a series with a consistent theme - did I succeed ? Did you imagine yourself there ? If not, what does it need to take you there ?

I'm going to enjoy this challenge...............

A consistent theme and a comfortable set of images to view. Very nice images to capture the mood Kaye!

Nice series Kaye...I like the person walking in the field of grass and find it quite evocative as is the black and white of the ship. I too will enjoy following your project and your travels

It is a challenge to get other than what a photography instructor of mine calls the 'cliche' shots when traveling. A girlfriend and I always laugh when we take one and say that we needed to get it out of our system to get to the good stuff I hope that you have the time to do both this year!

I love the simple ones best...#2. 4 and the last one...the black and white one is very good touch in this series too. In #1, the line on top of the little girl's head is a bit distracting..

Thanks to all for your positive comments. Mark and Mark - you would win the prize if there was one. Shane, I'll take a few clichés for you but hopefully not too many. Izzie - I hadn't noticed the line above the head, a piece of seaweed, I'll see if I can clone that out.

    Re: 2015 Project 52 - 1st quarter - Kaye Leggett - week 2 - anticipation

This week has been one of preparation for going away next week. So I decided to use the anticipation and excitement as my theme - here are the results. In case you can't guess, we're off to Cuba next week, so weeks 3 & 4 of project 52 will be posted late !

The first two I've had a try at a retro look with my pp - does it work ? And should the first image have the word 'passport' in full focus - I can't decide and have now looked at it too long ?

And then a more colourful take for a Caribbean destination

The third is, give or take a couple, the selection of guide books bought for us by our children at Christmas - anyone would think they are trying to get rid of us...

I'm interested in thoughts as to other images I could add to this series too.

    And in general C&C welcome

Liked all the images but I am especially interested in your trip to Cuba! Cannot wait for your photos as I have always wanted to go there. I hear it is beautiful. Now that the U.S. is changing it's position on our relations hope I might get to go. Have fun!!

    Re: 2015 Project 52 - 1st quarter - Kaye Leggett - week 2 - anticipation

I'm finding some of these images rather tricky to decide on my opinion.

So let's start with the easy one, #4. Yes, works fine for me.

With #1, I think you have it correct. The right edge is sharp so everything else should fade in to focus from the left.

Not at all sure about #2. The background is rather noisy and somehow it doesn't quite work for me.

Much the same with #3. I can see your thinking but have you tried some different placements for the required book? Should all the others be equally out of focus? Place that book fractionally further forwards so you can see just a fraction of the book cover and arrange nearer the image edge while the others gradually fade into the distance, in a particular order?

    Thanks Geoff for the feedback.

The original idea for the 2nd image was a picture of some holiday essentials, the original is here.......
Maybe it needs a few more items ??

The third - I tried this shot numerous times, different depths of field, different angles.....I'll give it another go. But no. the books won't appear in order, I like bookshelves in disorder, this includes our CD collection - drives my husband nuts !

    How exciting!
I am a bit of a comfort zone person myself, so I cannot imagine a trip to Cuba, but I can be excited for you most definitely!
I don't think in our project 52 it matters if we are late editing or posting etc, the aim is to keep our camera out of the bag each week.
From this set, I really like #2, I have no technical reason why it appeals to me over the others, so I'm sorry about that, I just like it.
Safe travels, our son is in Maastricht at the moment, so I have my atlas out already & can follow along!

Re your latest image, Kaye. It works for me, but for that orange thing going out of frame; can't make out what it is and the colour makes it prominent enough that it is a bit of a distraction.

I had similar thoughts to Geoff regarding #3; great concept, but I think the relative focus alone does not make the Cuba book stand out enough. Other than pulling it out further, I thought it might help if it were framed by two books of a different colour.

Very interesting, thoughtfully composed shots. As to suggestions, it might be a cliché, but I see open luggage on a bed, a man in soft focus choosing a tie or some other article of clothing to pack... For a real challenge, perhaps you could shoot a mirror reflection of a packing scene...

Thanks Janis and Geoff for the suggestions with regard to the book. I have tried it again and think that framing it with books the same colour helps (thank Janis) and also being in closer so that by and large the other titles are not all complete, I've also moved it down the line - is it an improvement do you think ?
