PROJECT 52, First Quarter; Taking a closer look. By Mknittle

I am working on noticing details. I will mostly be sticking to an industrial theme as there is a lot of that here
I will be trying to shoot for interesting close up compositions. My goal by the end of the year it to notice things that I missed in the past. C&C welcomed. So let's see how it goes

Mark, for me, the first one is a bit busy so although there are lots of details to explore, they tend to get a bit lost. The second one being both a simpler image and having the determination of nature to overcome steel, is much better IMHO.

    I agree but I couldn't help myself on #1:
Thanks Frank I will work on keeping things simple.

There is a lot going on in #1 shot...I do not know where to look and which one to look at first. #2 is really good. The inclusion of the leaf is a good touch too...Love it.

I think I have a lot of those close-up stuffs in my machinery section shots, too .... Mike Buckley gave me several advice on how to photograph them from the past. Took the shots, love it and kept it hidden, never to be seen again ... maybe one day I will revisit the place and take some different ones and angles.

Simple isn't always the answer Mark, but typically, simpler images have more appeal than really busy ones.

Mark, I agree with Frank for the most part but wonder if you use a square crop and eliminate the bottom portion you get a simpler composition. Complex simplicity is tough to achieve in a photo and I will look forward to your explorations.

I also like your second shot.

Mark, #1 is way too busy, it's like looking at a landscape...wait, what? Pffftt no such thing as too busy. The eye sees what the eye sees. I sees a straight 8. I like the final resting place of whatever it was that was powered by that 8. I look (pun intended) at it this way, your #1 is simply a mechanical landscape.
#2 is good, but when you go close up like that and isolate the item with no context it's a bit more like you're searching for replacement parts

LOL Yeah a blank white wall might be too simple sort of like a shot of the back of the lens cap.

I too prefer image #2 becase it 'says' more with the inclusion of the plant in contrast to the machinery- nature reclaiming etc- but also because of the colour which being muted adds to the story, but also shows the gradual succumbing to the elements more than the monochrome. I like also the cohesion of the tones of the peeling paint and the vegetation.

Thanks Carolyn, #2 looked much better in color than monochrome. Yesterday was a nice cloudy day perfect for shooting.

Very nice Mark! I really like the rich colors in the first one. Sticking with two primary colors adds punch!

You did good, Mark. These are much clearer, stronger images.
