Ice storm versus a tree

We got hit with several mm of freezing rain yesterday and this morning we had very cold temperatures and a brilliant blue sky, so I went out and took a few shots of the accretion on some of the twigs and branches on our trees. Lots of sparkles and specular highlights. The bokeh in the shot is the light coming through a tall ice coated tree in the background.

Freezing rain is the worst... But at least you figured out a way to get something positive out of it. The bokeh is really cool, Manfred. You had a dilemma here. The left and right branches were not within your DOF but if you increased f-stop you likely wouldn't have gotten the cool bokeh. Better than any of my winter shots. It's shameful how badly I ignore photography when it's cold ...

Yes, that was exactly my dilemma. I shot this with the Nikkor f/2 105 DC shot at f/5.6 and dialled the bokeh all the way at that aperture (f/5.6 is the maximum on the DC capabilites of the lens). I focused on the detail on the bit of ice dripping down, which left me with the detail on the left branch too.

Excellent. Freezing rain is beautiful. The main point of interest to me is that little cluster of stems at the terminal of the twig on the left. It is not in the center of the frame, which maybe you intended, but I wonder how it would look if you shifted the whole crop over to the left just a little, maybe eliminating the vertical stick coming down from the top right, and giving a little more room on the left between the twig and the left edge of the frame. Just an idea, though I understand that the experiment might not be possible depending on what was/wasn't in the original frame.

When I opened this in the Lytebox it became truly impressive; particularly like the detail in the ends of the branch to the left.

Nick - the shot is the whole frame, no crop and very little PP other than a standard RAW to jpeg with sharpening, contrast, etc.

Any work would be serious PP stuff. I had considered removing the one twig, but as my wife refused to let me cut it off the tree it's in the image....

As for the point of interest being off center, I tend to shoot this way, with the point of interest lying on or near one of the horizontal or vertical thirds. Hitting this exactly was a problem taking this shot. A strong north wind was moving things around a fair bit.

I do love those littlest twigs frozen by the ice...I've had similar shots in 2006 I think...

Because of your temperature there in Canada nowadays, we are going to have 10 days of freezing weather here too at Central. Thank you...we were advised not to go outside. ..Dang!

It's bloody cold here too, so we are just trying to dilute it with some of the warmer air down south. Sorry about that.

Nice composition. We had a really bad ice storm last year. Kept awake all night with big Cedar branches crashing down in the woods. Still got piles of them all over the property.
