Nicely done on the highlights and white fur, I like that swirly background also.

Thanks John. The swirly background was a fluke. It's a chair on my patio but I liked the way it showed in the photo.

Nicely done, both comp and techs.

Was there a biscuit involved? That's the only time my dog goes on high alert. Or when she hears the words "walk" or "ball"

beautiful! glad to see you've got the noise issue beat. i love the creamy swirls in the background. but the real show stopper is the pup, what a gorgeous girl she is. excellent job with the exposure, and the focus is spot on.

Indeed a terrific image Barbara, is she a Golden?
When I first opened the thread, I thought she might be a Maremma, we have a Golden, but I have friends with Maremmas

I am with Beth here about the noise issue. You shot this at Shutter Priority (again!) at 1/400. I am just wondering why you use Shutter Priority on a stationary subject...are you scared she might move? Just asking...

She is such a beautiful doggie. You've that eye for composition and it shows on all your shots. I like the pose of this one.

Kay, Thank you, she is a Great Pyrenees. A believe that Maremmas are closely related. They are both breed to protect livestock if I am not mistaken.

    Re: On High Alert

Izzie, I usually shot on shutter priority when I think there will be movement. We were out playing ball and she just happened to be still for this shot. I love to capture her with her ears flapping in the wind as she has incredibly beautiful movement. She glides as if skating on ice. I hope to take one of her running that I would feel good enough to post. Still working on it

Thanks Barbara, I dint know of that breed & yes the Maremmas do protect livestock.
I have friends who have a wee hobby farm & breed angora goats & rare chickens! They have & breed Maremmas, I was lucky enough to visit when they had a litter of absolutely gorgeous puppies once....I had to be forcibly removed from the farm!

Very nice image. The 300mm is a great lens for head shots of dogs. I love big dogs... The G.P. is a wonderful and courageous breed that is also a wonderful family companion.

    Re: On High Alert

I had a German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, wolf hybrid who was the most valiant family protector. Except that she too was afraid of thunder. I live near enough to Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton to hear the "Sounds Of Freedom" the Marine's artillery practice.

Once we came home to see our darling protector in our walk-in closet. She had pulled a rod of clothes down and was buried in it.

OTOH: No human or animal could threaten us or our little white Maltese dogs when our wolf was around. In those circumstances noise would not bother her. And at 85 pounds, she was gentle but, extremely protective.

    On High Alert

I would not have not wanted her mad at me....
