Shapes
Messing about with some images from a series taken last September.
Triangle
I thought the triangle formed by the 3 elements was quite funny, so then I decided to crop the next one to suit my theme so..
& then
Square

Re: Shapes
I truly like both of them, more so #2...the mood of the shot made it for me...I am guessing very early morning...

Re: Shapes
Good work, and interesting. Reminds me I do not know why artistic representation is almost always, essentially exclusively rectangular. Representations are rarely cropped/framed in any other fashion even when vignetted. Why is that? Habit? Something more deeply anchored in the human mind?

Re: Shapes
The second shot is quite good, and the first one less so.
Let me try to explain why.
Let's start with #2 - You have repeating patterns with the shelters and to a lesser extent the trees. The hill with the trees, the line of shelters and tire tracks all create converging lines. The brightest spot in the image is the bench on the first shelter, and that draws our eyes into the image frame. Add to that the fog, and that image has a lot going for you.
Bottom line; this image works very well compositionally.
Image #1 - You have three "virtual" lines that make up a geometric shape; a triangle. Unfortuantely, it's not quite that simple because we have to figure that out in the first place. The objects are scattered around the frame and our eyes have to move around the image to figure things out; any image that has that much work to figure out the triangle is not likely to work.
The second issue is that the personal water craft is creating a nice white wake, almost at the edge of the image, so our eyes are drawn out of the image, as opposed to into the image. A different crop with the three objects clustered together towards the centre might have been a stronger composition, but even then, it might not be enough.

Re: Shapes
I've got to say I agree with Manfred re the first image. When I first looked at it it gave me the impression that the Jet skier had spotted the kayaker and had spun around and was coming to get him with the bird as an innocent bystander.
The second one I think is really good. The leading lines, the fog and the angles all add up to make it great. Nice work.

Re: Shapes
Thankyou for your comments everyone.
Yes Izzie it was early morning, we live in a town that has a bay with easterly aspect, so it catches the early morning light, when the sun breaks through the fog, it is quite lovely.
There is a small yachting club for the boats and a sea water swimming enclosure with Boardwalk and grass area and steps for the fitness groups.
Manfred & Graham Thankyou for your constructive feedback, I think my trainable idea, was something I thougth of as I looked through the batch from the shoot, and not really a well composed image at all.
More of a holiday snap than a picture isn't it.
The aim of the morning was to get a nice image that is iconic of our region, I'm not sure if the boat harbour or the boardwalk will win out, but I will share the possible suspects shortly.
I want 4 images to print & hang together, my husband's request including home here, home NZ, favourite holiday home Noosa and his favourite scenic scene of Happy Valley near Bright.
They'd ound look better if we bought someone else's work, who knows landscapes! But I'm having fun with the project.
Thankyou again everyone for replies & time taken for suggestions, much appreciated indeed.
