    Photshop foobaarrr auto save??

As part of my project 52 im learning how to make selections, i had a very tricky one to make of a motorbike and spent 4 hours doing it..... I left it open in PS and i assume Mr gates decided it would be a good time to do and auto update and reboot.....So i got up this morning and there it was.... GONE!

Ok So lesson learned, i need to save everytime..... and in this case i need the practice so im not overly concerned BUT,

does PS have an auto save function?

    can i recover my work?

if microsoft office can do it......

Then Adobe (which is much more expensive) must be able to as well?

It might still be there...open PS>open file dropdown>open recent, it might still be there.
Additionally, for next time, open preferences>open file handling>insure that your "auto save" box is checked.

What level are you on? From CS6 on there is autosave. Do CTRL/K for preferences then select file handling. There should be options at top for auto file saving and you can specify how often.

    Hi All,

    Thanks for the speedy response,

Im using cs5 unfortunately the open recent only seems to apply to saved documents i cant see any auto save option in the preferences so this may be a cs6 feature. if anyone knows if the auto save can be done in cs5 please let me know.

    Ta muchley.

    It's only from CS6 http://www.photoshopessentials.com/b...auto-save-cs6/

Have you considered taking out CC 2014 subscription? The new facilities in that are rather good. And you get automatic updates as and when they roll out. You also get lightroom, if you want that as well, for the same fee.

I can't answer that for you. I use PS a lot because of the type of photography I do. I met an 83 year old photographer who does landscapes. He just uses LR and his shots looked good. It all depends. CC 2014 is a very good product, but like all good (manufactured) things you won't get it in a bargain basement.

Not a PS user but have ye checked the AppData directory in Windows? it's hidden by default so ye need tae change folder settings tae show hidden folders, then use this shortcut - click "Run" from the program menu, type "%appdata%", click OK.

Ye should find the PS folder there. Since there's no Autosave file, there may be projects, images or other such sub-folders or files there.

This is worth a try, even if unlikely.

There comes a point Mark when "principle" leads to beating one's head against a brick wall...
    it only hurts your head.

Ten bucks a month, which is what I pay as an educator of my children, is chicken feed when you
consider the investment made with the rest of your gear.

Yes guys, your probably right but as someone who at the moment doesn't use PS very much its to early to make that investment. and here's another rub, as you say Bill you pay $10 but even at todays favorable exchange rates i have to pay $13.28..... hows that work then? does it cost more to support UK users? i think not! maybe im a natural candidate for gimp

I suspect the additional cost is VAT. US prices are shown without any of the local sales taxes. I have the same issue, as I get charged HST (Harmonized Sales Tax); our version of VAT, with both a Federal Government and Provincial Government component of taxes, on top of an unfavourable exchange rate right now.

Why allow microsoft to auto update anything? I decide what updates I want added, and certainly not the modules that check for software validity - and cause problems with slow internet connections etc.
All updates are things I do at the end of a session when I can just leave the computer to waste and hour or two of time (well CC2014 does)

For people who likes to invest in the cloud, which I do not trust, maybe it is good for them to shell out $9.99/month subscription. I like something that I can hold in my hands, a hard copy of CS6. It might be the last one, but I'll have it. I am not quite sold on cloud yet...not even on google.

I dont allow them but i cant see any other reason why the pc re started (happy Boab?) .... its set to be on all the time and for manual updates..... its a bit of a mystery...

    Re: Photshop foobaarrr auto save??

    So,

Things ah learned fae this thread...

Always autosave in PS....mmmm - unless ye can't.
    Never use windows auto update
PS doesn't cost the fabled $9.99 per month - it's a fair bit more inc. taxes.
    PS auto updates....isn't that a " BAD THING ?"
Ye can't open recent docs in PS, unless ye save them...What's that all about? Even PaintDotNet saves projects 'til ye delete them.

    Things ah knew already...

    Never auto update Windows
In Windows, it's simplest tae choose "notify me about updates and I will choose whether to download and install them"
    If Mark has a major FU.....it's Microsoft's fault ...
The Gimp, Picasa, PaintDotNet, Luminance HDR, Noiseware, Photofiltre, Virtual Studio, Adobe DNG, s7raw, rawtherapee,...are all free

A wise man once talked about producing wealth without ever owning the tools or means of production.... but ye all knew that...?

PS as an addendum tae post#19...PS auto update?

If Windows forced an update - and they can, in rare circumstances, do so. eg an attack on servers; Windows would enforce a security update but only after several hours and then restart the PC, they don't switch it off.
