TREE THREAD - Post your tree shots here

Plenty of fabulous photos in this thread but not very many flowering trees. Here are a few from around the streets and gardens of Cairns. The photos are a bit amateurish but I hope they don't detract too much from the beauty of the trees.


Brachychiton acerifolus. A native of the rainforests on NE Queensland. Common in gardens and also called the Coral Tree


Mucuna Bennetti or Flame of the Forest. Not really a tree but a massive vine, native of Papua New Guinea that invades the largest of trees. The site of a tree covered in this vine in flower is breathtaking. A true tropical it will not grow in temperate or even sub-tropical climates.


Cassia Fistula. A very common Cassia that flowers in spring. There are streets lined with this tree in older areas of town. A spectacular sight in suburbia.


And finally, the Poinciana. It is at its best when flowering after a very dry winter when all the green leaves drop and all you can see is this massive brilliantly red tree. It is a little too wet here in Cairns to see it at its best.

The theme for this series is a good idea. A lot of noise in your images, but this is the place to find ways of improving your technique. Could you provide some details on your camera and settings used?

I think it is a FinePixS7000 1/400 F5.6 iso160. And I like them because they are very colourful.

Yes, Arith, it was a FinePix7000. I bought the camera several years ago with a view to documenting the thousands of plant species found in my local region. My main interest at the time was the plants, not photography, hence my comment that the pictures are a bit amateurish. My interest in plants has now morphed into a bigger interest in photography for which this forum gives inspiration. Thanks for the comments, Shadowman. I guess I wasn't seeking C&C in this case as I just wanted to add a bit of colour to this thread and put in a plug for tropical trees which seem a bit unrepresented to date.

Not normally a fan of infrared. But this one works really well. The quality of the composition contributes to that significantly, but there's also an attractive range of tone across the foliage.

I drool over complexity, I'm thinking of forming a maximalist movement where images are deliberately complex and this is an example of where it works with the fine branches interwoven. I can remember processing film in a weak solution for about a week to get the wire look, but this looks great.

I put quite a heavy silver tone on the sky - (too much?) Held back on the land via a layer mask with a gradient on it.

I like that one. The depth is very good - the overhanging branches, then the line of trees, and finally the cluster of trees in BR corner. V. good.

Thanks for the kind comment Donald. The variation in tone is quite striking. It appears that IR response is very dependant on the total amount of light being reflected. Even a very small change in illumination results in a large change in reflectance and hence tonal variation.

Hi Steve - Thanks for the kind comment. There is a kind of spookiness about forests, some more so than others. The one on Screel is definitely in the creepy category. That was what I was attempting to capture, but complexity of verticals and horizontals comes into it. You probably know this, but the famous abstract painter, Piet Mondrian, who became well known for his highly simplified works comprising vertical and horizontal black lines and rectangular blocks of primary colours, started his artistic life painting treescapes from forests. There is speculation that his later developments came from these initial works through the vertical and horizontals he saw in the forest trees. Moral: simplicity emerges from complexity!!!
