    Kahikatea

    Kahikatea (White Pine) Podocarpus Dacrydioides

    img_5805-kahikatea-framed.jpg

These trees are normally known by the Maori name of Kahikatea.pronounced(KA-HI-KA-T-ER) The timber from these trees is odourless. They were practically wiped out in the 1800s as the timber was used for making boxes to export butter to Britain. A lot of farmers in the Waikato have stands of these trees on their property and they are making a come back. The best examples of these trees is on the west coast of the south island of New Zealand

Just a bit of useless information.

Great to see you straight in posting images up onto the forum.I like these sort of images where the whole frame is filled up with foliage. The only problem with this one is that for me, with my red-green colour blindness problem I will not be seeing the subject tree stand out from its background as vividly as you and others.

Thanks. If I don't post people cannot help me learn by telling me a better way of taking the pics.

Hi Delboy: I really like this shot, and the border you have applied. It's a very nice scene and interesting info to go with it. Glad the trees are making a comeback.

    Re: Kahikatea

    Thank you Wendy

The sad thing is we have a magnificent specimen in our garden, It is getting too tall, they can grow up 150 ft with big buttress roots as it is a swamp tree. We had an Arborists visit us the other day and we were advised it was time for the tree to go. My wife and I are going to give the timber (lumber) to the local Polytec as I believe it is a good wood for wood turning.

    Regards

    Squiggly Infrared Tree

I've been taking lots of IR photos with my converted Canon 20D. Here's one not posted elsewhere.

Hi Dipayan: Nice shot, I like looking at the sky through trees. I'm wondering what this would look like rotated 90 deg. counterclockwise. The angle looks rather strange to me and it seems top heavy. Might be just me though.

    Re: Squiggly Infrared Tree

Hi David: I really like this effect and it works well with this crooked old tree. I'm wondering if the white clouds that outline the tree near the top could be extended to the right side of the frame. To me it would seem more balanced if the clouds at the top followed the pattern across scene like the ones at the bottom

    Re: Squiggly Infrared Tree

Hi Wendy - good point. I could certainly clone some in. I've been so busy taking IR shots to see what things look like that I've not been paying all that much attention to compositional detail. What I did think interesting about this shot is the fact that the IR "white" foliage shows up quite well against the very light sky - not what I would have expected. Anyway, thank you for your perceptive comment.

Hi Dipayan: To me it looks better like this. Perhaps someone else will be kind enough to comment. It might be just me but the first one makes me want to twist my head and view it sideways.

New Zealand Cabbage Tree Ti Kouka (Maori) (cordyline australis)

This is one of the largest cordyline or tree lilies in the world, can grow up to 9 mtrs (30 ft)
This tree was very important to the Maoris who used the new bud shoots as food, and the leaves which are more durable than flax for weaving baskets and sandles etc.
The early settlers to New Zealand gave the name Cabbage Tree to the Ti Kouka because they used to boil and eat the young shoots.
About ten years ago, a lot of these trees were dying and they could not find the reason. It was put down to you know what (global warming) but it turned out to be a virus, which I believe they had no answer for. The last five or so years these tree have made a spectacular recovery and a lot of them are thriving very well. As far as I am aware it is a native of New Zealand.

This photo was taken in a small park on the banks of a river that runs through the centre of our town.

This was shot at first light in the morning. The sunrise was trailing a storm front.
