    D810, D800E, D800, D750, D610, D600 - I am advancing

    Attention to D750, D810, D800, D800E, D610 and D600 owners

There will be a Nikon press release scheduled for January 19th that will announce a new “I AM Advancing” program for Nikon DSLR owners where photographers will be able to download advanced firmware updates and add new functionality to their cameras for up to 3 years. The program is starting with support for 6 FX DSLR cameras (D750, D810, D800, D800E, D610 and D600) and will be free to join, not sure what will happen after the first 3 years. The new website will be located at http://imaging.nikon.com/advancing (not yet active).

Nikon may start charging money for certain firmware updates and maybe this new program is the first step towards that. Here is a list of firmware updates will be available after the program starts:

New White Balance update, containing Nikon’s latest algorithms for high-quality color balance in any light.
New “Metallic” Picture Control option, providing photographers with a unique high-contrast setting which is both natural and eye-catching.
New RAW Histogram. This feature displays impressive full-screen histograms for all 3 color channels (red, green and blue) simultaneously, based on data directly from the image sensor. The new feature allows advanced photographers to fine-tune perfect exposure for each shot.
Nikon will bring two D810 features to other cameras in the Nikon DSLR line-up:
"Flat” Picture Control, which allows photographers more options for adjustment in post-processing and
Electronic First-Curtain Shutter feature, which eliminates vibrations caused by the shutter, is newly available for the recently announced Nikon D750 camera.

There was another thread on this a few days ago but specific to the RAW histogram coming out. Thanks for fleshing out the topic with the rest of the story and the relevant dates. With Nikon's typical lack of describing their vision/plan we can only speculate regarding what this holds for the future.

I guess it's been delayed, or it was an elaborate hoax but I find that hard to believe.

Hardly the same build as the d300 jeremy had a d7000 wish id never sold it but i like the simple control layout of the 800 and would like a similar fast dx, seems Nikon are missing something in their craze to push everyone to FX

People appear to assume wrongly that FX is a step up from DX, they think FX means "pro" or better, I won't soon sell my D7000

I don't think that's necessarily true. Nikon seems to be pushing us that way whether desired or not. The D300/300s was one of their best selling bodies ever. Yet they don't seem to think that a semi-pro DX body will sell. If all they are going to produce is along the lines of D7100 they've lost me. I'm waiting for the typical product releases that come out in February and if there's no serious DX among them I'm buying a Sony APS-C format mirrorless and Zeiss lenses. I don't own any DX lenses so nothing lost there. If a cropped format isn't going to be useful with long glass then might as well go light weight. In which case I've likely bought my last Nikon body. Unless I drop one in he ocean.

I never did bond with the D7000. Took some of my best photos with that camera but never did like shooting it. But its replacement lives inside the D800/810.

But the limitations surely of systems like Sony/pentax are lenses and availability and the system.

More is manufactured for nikcan than other models

Only at the long end. Ironically I've gradually shifted to full frame for all of my wildlife shooting and cropped sensor for landscape. I need the ISO for wildlife and most landscape shooting is done while travelling so size/weight is a consideration. Somewhat backward considering I own a D810 and shoot it almost exclusively on critters so far.
