Ansel Adams With His Camera COLORIZATION

    Hi Everybody,

I've been a fan of Ansel Adams landscape photography since I started teaching myself photography. I've always seen this portrait of him but never in color. I figured it was time to tackle this picture and try to color it the best I can. I think it came out fairly decent. I had a bunch of problems with the greens but overall I think it's ok looking. Let me know what you guys think. I also included a photo of my attempt at an Ansel Adams style photo of the tree at the farm behind my house. Oh, and if you have any tips or suggestions, please feel free to share!

    Thanks,
    Zak

Great job as always... I see that he was using a Weston Master II. I began with a Weston Master MkI which was not calculated in ASA (American Standards Association, a forerunner to ISO which is the same numerically as ASA); rather the original Weston Master used Weston units which differed in about 1/3 stop from ASA. You needed a bit of math proficiency to be a photographer in those days...

I think that the Weston Master III was the first Weston meter in which the exposure units could be used interchangeably with ASA...

Ugh, where were you when I was looking up the camera model in the picture!? Well at least I'm somewhat close in the colors I chose for the camera body, fittings etc. It kinda matched the Zeiss Folding Tropica Camera that I used to color this image. Thanks for the info!

I sure do like the group of birds above the tree.

I'm curious: Is the photo of Ansel Adams in the public domain? If not, did you obtain permission to colorize and publish it here?

I'm not sure if the photo is in public domain. It's on literally every landscape sight I've visited so I assume it is. I never ask permission to color images since the subjects are almost always dead.

Those criteria have nothing to do with copyright law. I don't know how you feel about the moral aspects but you should at least be careful that your colorizations don't subject you to expensive law suits.

Thanks for looking out for me. I've got this picture plus a ton of others on the subreddit forum called Colorization plus Flickr and a few others. I've never had a problem since I'm only taking ownership of the colorization not the photograph itself. Thanks again.

I might try to colorize one of his landscape photos next but that seems like a giant undertaking.

You're definitely up to the task. Have at it!

It's a reasonably safe assumption that any photo made available at Wikimedia Commons is in the public domain.

I've actually found a very interesting collection on the Library of Congress site that I'll probably choose from next. Definitely worth a look if you've never visited their site before.

Wow, fantastic color conversion. The tree image sort of reminds me of his Oak Tree, Sunset City exposure...(and for $20K, that can be yours by the way... )

I'm not an expert, but I think what you're doing and by posting on a learning site like this fits neatly into 'fair use'.

Thank you. I'm glad someone finally agreed that I'm not breaking any copyright laws.
