Windows XP is still supported . .

Big shock horror last year when ever-friendly MicroSoft announced "no more support for XP". When I announced somewhere that I'm sticking with XP until they prise it from my cold, dead fingers. I got a lot of shock, horror responses to the effect that I should be at the very least be on good old 64-bit Windows 7, along with at least 4 cores of CPU, gobbitts of RAM, Tb's of HD, etc., etc., ya get the idea . . .

The lady that fixes my stuff says "don't listen, they're just talking about phone support. Like there's a huge installed XP Pro base in the commercial world where the IT departments aren't suddenly going to stop everything and just install Vista or 7 or 8 or anything else MicroSoft can going to dream up to make more money."

And lo, this came today . . .

Windows XP is still supported . .

Brought a smile to my face

I heard that support was extended for business users, don't know how far into the future that will last.

Good for you that you still got it. If I have a dollar for every wish I have.....
You know one of my neighbours across where we live when she doesn't want anything happening she complains very loudly...she then get what she wants. Perhaps we should all complain about Photoshop CS6 as the last...too.

Interesting Ted. I recently dumped XP and went to Windows 7 as Lightroom was not compatible with XP (so it said when trying to download a trial version).

Having done that I then found some of my important old software was not compatible with 7 but have now finally managed to get XP running in Windows Virtual PC within 7 and old programs loaded and working fine.

Whilst sorting problems to get the virtual XP working just about everything I read said there were no longer new security updates for XP, strange.

Ted, I am a Mac user who was running XP on a partition. I lost my original hard drive yesterday and was thinking I would need to buy and install Windows 7 on this new one. If I just installed XP from my original disks, do you think I would automatically get all the service packs and updates?

For Your Information I have both W7 and XP running on my machine and my service people organised a menu in the opening process which gives me a choice which one I wish to use ... default used to be XP but I thought I should try and get used to W7 and had them change default ... silly me as I now have to 'watch' the opening to select XP
Nice to know about the updates Thanks

    Hello Janis,

I am probably not the person to answer your question. My only Mac is a Performa which I use for music work - System 9.0 and never connected.

My XP Pro SP3 was installed from a disk by my local computer store just a couple of weeks ago (to replace Vista on a computer I bought from them). Since then, I had re-activated Windows security and updates are appearing regularly, mostly for 'Windows Media Format Runtime', whatever TF that is

I would give it a try, assuming that re-installing XP on your Mac can be undone? Others will know better than I.

    Pedantry is not a felony . .
Nothing to with the thread, Ted, but I noticed your signature. Don't know if you've come across Lynne Truss, author of "Eats, Shoots and Leaves".

Her rallying cry is "Pedants of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your sense of proportion."

    That's my girl

Thanks, Ted. I think I will give it a go. Apart from tying up the computer for some time, I think I have nothing to lose.

Central IT on our higher ed campus yanked all XP machines off the network sometime last year. I support computer lab Macs so no worries ;-)

    XP

Vista was a little more visually interesting and 7 a little better again. The jury is still out with 8 though I do like it in general - when I'm forced to use it that is. OS X Yosemite is still my favourite, its the little things like the semi transparent top bar in Safari where you can see web pages 'go under it' that even after a few months using it still put a smile on my face....that and life without Hot Corners is a miserable, soulless barren affair

The thing I don't like about 8 is when it "thinks" I want to do something and does it. Causing me to start over. I don't know if there is a way to stop that yet.

I don't know if it helps with your problem, but I downloaded a classic shell. Normal interface again, no apps.
    And this PC is w2k.

I agree Ted, a well set up and updated copy of XP works very well. Over the years I have often been surprised by the number of people who hate (I don't think that is too strong a word) XP. All the XP machines I have owned (I still have one left) have been rock solid.

However, I suggest you look at 64 bit Windows 7. I know it is an old OS now but I installed it on a couple of lowly dual core PCs with 4 Gig of RAM and it is good. I tend to think Windows 7 is the OS that the original Windows 8 should have been. Microsoft should not have tried to make Windows 8 an OS that is all things to all men - the PC world and the touch screen world are equally important, but different.

I've read that 8.1 has addressed the problems that 8 had and that you can set up 8.1 to be more like a regular PC OS but can't comment because I have not used it.

I also read that with the 'demise' of XP those still using it would be vulnerable to viruses, spam, malware - well the sky hasn't fallen in around here yet

Problem comes with XP when you want to install IE11.

Some newer software demands IE10 or 11

My XP is still at IE8.0 but I only have to use that for work. Backward IT department. I am convinced they still use Windows 3.1.1

I do run W8.1 but only under Parallels on the Mac.

Oddly enough, Dave, I have that very book!
