My wife's two broken wine glasses

Not only does my wife break wine glasses, she breaks them so they look good when presented together.

A large lamp with five bulbs was shining through a large diffuser and around black felt toward the subjects and camera. A flag of black poster board with a rectangular hole cut in the middle that the lens looks through was used to eliminate flare. The tabletop is the bottom side of a door mat made of carpet. Desaturated (not converted using a color filter) to monochrome.

More genius/another great result. Reminds of seeing to persons, unequal in some way, interacting.

Thanks for noticing that, Mark. I often see that sort of personification when multiple pieces of glassware, whether broken or whole, are presented together.

I like the positioning of the two broken wine glasses. That works really well.

I'm not sure if I like the highlights on the mat that the glasses are standing on.

All that being said; you seem to have found a sure-fire way of getting more broken glasses to photograph; just give your wife more wine.

Interesting shot. How do you achieve the black background?

Thanks to John, Manfred and Ron!

Ron: My first post in the thread explains that the background is black velvet. However, when you review that explanation of the total lighting scheme, take into account that the background in the photo would have been black even if I had used white material instead of black material. That's because no light is falling directly on the background. The room is very dark and, ideally, no light is being reflected onto it.

This one is really cool, Mike. I like the material they're standing on too. It's a bit different.

OK, I've finally caught on. Though I've not seen you come right out and say it, evidence is beginning to mount that you've been annoying your wife to the point of throwing wine glasses at you. And all for the sake of a photo or two. For shame

You're right, Dan, that I do regularly irritate my wife. However, that's not to the point that she would waste perfectly good wine glasses on me.

That's a good point. My bride would definately not deem it worth breaking a glass. She'd take time to find something more durable to bonk me on the head with

    Hi Mike,

I missed this set of broken glass images, so just to say that we are indeed very fortunate that your wife breaks glasses. All absolutely gorgeous with this one being my favourite of the set, followed closely by the single broken glass for the simple beauty.
