I once had an SD card fall apart, luckly as I was putting it into the camera. Lesson learnt - better cards are properly stuck together, the latest I bought claims to be waterproof - though how you waterproof the contacts I find difficult to conceptualise.
Ouch! All my cards are Sandisk and never had any failure yet whereas my husband uses the same brands and he has already ruined two...Have to watch out for him instead....
If you are using SD cards, I would recommend finding an SD card wallet in which to store them. They are more fragile than CF cards.
I was happy when Canon offered the 7D-Mk1 with the older, faster, more durable and more expensive CF card system, rather than following the thundering herd of cameras using SD cards. Canon went one step further by offering the 7D-Mk2 with choice of CF or SD slots...
The CF card is built like a tank. Mine have gone through the washing machine and have been chewed on by puppies.
The SD card is not only less durable but even with latest technology the SD card is slower than the CF card...

"The 7D II takes advantage of recent memory card technology: SD cards with UHS-I (SDR104) and CF cards with UDMA 7, allowing theoretical maximum write speeds of 104MB/s and 167MB/s, respectively. Using a fast card allows the buffer to empty quickly and shoot at high frame rate longer."
Of course, the SD card is less expensive. It is approximately half the price of the equivalent size/speed CF card from the same manufacturer. But since I have been using my present batch of CF cards for years and years with absolutely no problems, they are (IMO) well worth the extra price. I have NEVER had a CF card fail in use after originally working. I have had two Kingston CF cards fail at the initial test and have stopped purchasing that brand - although I have some old Kingston cards that are still working and which I have no problems continuing to use.

I've used only Sandisk since I went digital. My first two bodies had only CF cards, and I have never had a CF card fail. I still have the card that I have used in my 50D for 5 years or so. My current main body is a 5D3, which has both a CF slot and an SD slot. I have been writing to the SD most of the time because there are no pins to worry about when replacing the card, but I hadn't given thought to the difference in reliability. I never carry an SD card unprotected.
I use either the small case it came with or the case for my spare camera battery. Fits snuggly underneath the battery.
The failure is generally the result of a poorly manufactured card and weekly checks is not going to do anything; i.e. the card is not going to crack just sitting in the camera.
On the other hand, checking every time you insert or remove the card from the camera does make sense, as this is probably the time it gets the most stress put on it.
