I can't think of anything to criticise in that. I suppose we could argue that the tip of his (her?) left ear is a bit too tight to the edge of the frame. But that is just a lovely picture. Not over-sharpened (which is easy to do when trying to pick out the hairs on the coat - I know, I've done it!). Very well exposed to capture detail in the black coat.

Donald - this is my five year old Border Collie Bean. She is a sweet, lovely dog. I have had some difficulty taking photos of her with her dark coat, especially in the snow. I have re-cropped this to leave a bit more room to the right - does this look better? Thank you for your comments!

I think it does. Feels, to me, more 'balanced'.

Bean is not unlike my Garry .....

It is a wonderful image. Unimprovable! And so reminds me of my beloved Jetta (see Avatar), gone from us two years now but often in my mind, always in my heart. Who can help me with the origin of the legend that when man requested of the deity longer life, the dog stepped forward and gave up years from his own so that man could have more time on earth? It rings true.

Lovely image; beautiful dog. I'd like to see this without the vingette as I feel the beautiful dog would stand out even more.

Being a fellow New Englander - hoping this snow slows down soon!

Thank you, Mark. That does ring true. Their time with us is too short. I try to remember to enjoy every moment.

Kim - Thanks for the suggestion. I removed the vignette. What do you think?
More snow here today. We are running out of places to put it :-) But it is gorgeous and the dogs are having a ball.

    Re: And more snow...

On the vignette - I tend to add enough how the image feels without affecting how it looks i.e. add 'til you notice it. Which would be somewhere between the original you posted and the one without it. This is an image where I also might experiment with reversing it. It is such a lovely image some experimentation is called for, and I think something other than none might be your favorite.

    Re: And more snow...

Agree with your comments, Kim and Mark. I'll play around with it. Thanks!

I used the Radial Filter to darken the background a bit but without the harshness of the vignette. I like this better than the first (light background) revision.

Is this more what you were thinking?

I vote for the vignette it seems to add and enhance the main subject. Love the great pics , I do follow you on Flickr.

    Re: And more snow...

Diane - I put a vignette on most of my images; usually just enough that you don't notice it's there, but still enough to draw the viewer's eyes into the centre of the image. Subtlety works; as per Mark's comment.

    Re: And more snow...

Diane, thanks for sharing the revision. I agree a more subtle vignette may be best. The filter used in the most recent version seems to have darkened/changed color of the lower left area..I prefer the look of that area in the original.

    Re: And more snow...

Thanks so much for everyone's help and suggestions! I'm learning a great deal, including what I find appealing. I will continue to play around with this and other images regarding vignettes and highlighting the subject. Heading out to shovel :-)
