Sitting in the Chaos - C&C Welcome

Hi, going forward on my photography venture I stopped and clicked another shot. Can you please review it and let me know what exactly is missing for it to make it much better?

I was just experimenting to capture some portraits in chaotic situations. So I used my ND Filter to capture it. I havnt changed it to black and white because of the fact that many colors have been used here. I have also kept some chips packets and bottles in the frame to show that he is sitting in a street near a street hawker.


Please provide your views and suggestion with composition, frame, crops and processing. Also, please suggest if it is advisable to change it into b&W?

Hi Raj - you are getting quite abstract in your recent work.

The thing that quickly strikes me about the shot is that it has two subject; the man and the snacks, and that's where it doesn't work for me. I find the man quite interesting, but the snacks positioned to the right of the image pull my eyes right out out the shot.

I think I would prefer a crop more along these lines. A shot with two distinct subjects tends not to work all that well compositionally.

Raj, what do YOU want the image to portray?

For me I far prefer the original as it tells me a story and that is of a street vendor with trade passing him by.

A crop to remove the snacks tells a different story.

Raj, I like this. The man's eyes are focused on the snacks. So you have this juxtaposition of an older, very traditional looking man eyeing (perhaps with disdain) what passes as modern food, or snacks. It may just be that the image is more relevant to you than to others.

Isolating the subject as Manfred has suggested works well, but it doesn't tell the same story as the op. I agree though that the snacks are a bit distracting. You could try applying a little blur to them so they don't stand out quite so much. And maybe crop the photo to place the man on the left third -

Pic #1 I am baffled as to were to focus , pic #2 is much easier though I am still confused on what action the subject is doing and the events around him . Again this is my take and for me a little too extreme.Nice work.

Thanks a lot for your review Yes, i wanted to portray a story that he is sitting in a street by adding snacks, He was not the street vendor but the crop by manfred looks good and made the subject more prominent.

thanks for your valuable review the subject was sitting and waiting. Now a days elections are going on in our city so these guys were campaigning for a political party thats why they were wearing orange cap, white dress.

Raj - what you are trying to pull off is compositionally very difficult; although I won't say impossible (not for a man of your talents ).

The issue that needs to be addressed is how to couple the two main subjects in your image; the man and the snacks / drinks being sold by the street vendor become the single focus of the viewer; almost like a group shot of two people. My thoughts are that you would have to do a reshoot and change the camera angle so that the two are much closer together, and the snacks need to be closer to the centre of the frame. In this image the bright drinks and snacks lead our eyes right off the edge of the page.

Thanks a ton in detailed explanation of the composition. I got your point about the distance between the two subject. I will surely reshoot it with a closer distance. For this shot I have opted for the crop you have suggested I will surely do more stuffs with slow shutter just as suggested in terms of composition. Really an excellent suggestion Much appreciated.
