Framing a shot such as this in low light can be a bit "hit and miss" for me but in this case I have shot this location before and that helps. One thing I have found with photographing surf with relatively long exposures is that the timing of the shutter operation can make quite a difference to the effect obtained. It all depends on when the waves are breaking, not so much for 10 secs but for exposure times around 1-4 seconds.

Great shot, Dave. I like the sharpness in the foreground but I like others who posted earlier, I have a problem with the clouds. I think they need to be either blurrier or less blurry. (At the moment, they make me feel dizzy, which is possibly because they seem to be out of focus rather than blurred.) As Terry, suggested, one shot without the ND and then blend into a composite.

Thanks Greg. Yes a composite may well have helped with the clouds although I'm not sure to what extent with a 2 stop increase in shutter speed (from 10sec to 2.5 secs) as the clouds were moving quite rapidly. You also assume that my mental agility is up to the task of thinking of these things at 5AM without a trace of caffeine in the bloodstream.
