    more lighting scenarios

When I was a young man my mama told me to dance with the girl what brung me.
Keep coming back to orchids...balancing the colors was a chore with this 6 image merge.

    Ok Chauncey here goes.........................

I'm wondering if the attention to producing technical perfection within the area of lighting, merging multiple images, total sharpness throughout the depth and the arrangement of compositions is taking more importance than the flower itself?

Put another way, perhaps a beautiful flower has almost become a secondary component in the finished image.

Graham, when I went back and read this, I figured that I was being a little obtuse.
The girl that brought me represents the orchids that mostly turn out well. Dancing
with other subjects leads to less than successful images.
perhaps a beautiful flower has almost become a secondary component in the finished image.
You are correct on this count but, does it not behoove us to do the best we can with that beautiful flower.

    Chauncey?

dance with the girl what brung me.
Do you love this girl? Or is your focus on her dress, her shoes, her hair?

On the orchid note, I too love flowers, especially in winter. I want my love to show in my images.

Go ahead and worry about the lighting, but more in terms of how you can showcase your absolutely divine blooms. Don't worry about focus stacking. Use your tripod and set aperature to f11? f16? even f22 if you dare? LOLS!!!!

for this image, tone down the brightness a tad. It is hard to enjoy the detail in the petals.

The image seems a bit over saturated for my taste? have a look at the stem. It looks more yellow than green.

At last, a country girl heard from. Yeah I do and...want her to look her best.

Over saturated you say...looks interesting in B&W.

    Were you fishing, Bill?

Brighten the image, and recover highlights. Gorgeous in b&w.

Now is that the flower we are photographing or the one we are dancing with

But the answer would be the same whichever scenario, yes

    Yes

really good to look at, and technically great, but could you remove the highlights from under the green bits - just light naturally comes from above so those highlights jar to my seeing brain.
