Helpful Posts: This coyote and I were looking each other over. I could feel the intelligence in its eyes. The snow caked on its chest helped tell a story of where it was making its living. Watching it helped me understand why the coyote is important in many Native American stories. It is an intelligent and beautiful animal.

Would I have gone for a tighter crop? Probably. But I think I would have been wrong. The composition as it is works for me.

Chuck, a splendid shot - the pose and look say it all, they are intelligent and have to be to survive the conditions they live in - and us !

Thanks for all of your comments. I was in Yellowstone National Park near a dead elk. This coyote was coming in for lunch. I just stayed put. The dead elk was in a draw and out of sight from where I was, but I knew it was there. The coyote turned from the road and went through some deep snow. Then disappeared into the draw. It would come out of the draw about every 40 seconds and look around. It is probable that the elk was killed by wolves and the coyote didn't want to be caught on the kill - a mistake that could be fatal for the coyote. Here are a couple more photos that document the story.

Excellent shot btw. We have them here too but our appear to be much skinnier and take off when you are still a mile away. One day....
