    Off the hip

I wandered through the downtown area a few days ago; with the 14-24mm lens pre-focused to around 3m / 10ft, set at f/11 (so absolutely everything would be in focus) at a focal length of 14mm. I wandered around shooting people at random, from the hip (i.e. clicking the shutter without composing or using the viewfinder, with the camera held around hip level) just to see what I would get.

This is one of the better shots; lots of lines and geometrical shapes and a few folks walking by. Somehow the shot just works.

Nice, Manfred, and trying something different too. Did you have auto ISO set with a min shutter speed?

Through practice, trial and error, I'm finding my feet on shooting from the hip in this way. Different focal lengths require different min shutter speeds, even to the point of whether your subject is walking directly towards you or across the frame.

Any closer and the lead guy's foot will start to look clown like instead of just large though ;-)

Yes it does work. My only thought is that it might be better without the lamp post on the LHS but what the heck.

Pretty cool set up and sounds like an enjoyable adventure , the photo looks darn good from the hip and probably I would suspect I wouldn't know unless you told me .

I like it. Sounds like a fun way to try something new. It does look very cold there....bbbrrrr.
