    Dereliction

I am shooting to a theme, at this time I am looking at 'dereliction' and currently being boring and going for the obvious, but do they work as they are within the title and what would you change in them?

I did think of this in B & W but not sure there is enough contrast to make it punchy enough?

I'd agree, Mark. When you think of dereliction as a project, you do tend to think of B & W. But it would be different and exciting to develop a project on dereliction with the images being in colo9ur. Good on you. Go for it.

The first would probably work if you include a tiny bit more of the window or focused on something inside.

I agree with both Donald's and John's comments. You might find some beautiful colours in decaying material -- as in the rusty iron in the first image.

    Re: Dereliction

Thank you Donald, I shall progress in colour for the moment and see how it goes, the contrast between the rust on the metal and the dirty broken glass works well I think

Thanks John, I do have another with more of the window frame and some of the inside, so will play with that as a seperate item to see how I can develop my B & W skills

    Cheers Greg, onward in colour

another in this thread, trying for simple and almost abstract, it was a choice to get the vertical lined up or the horizontal - in retrospect i think I went the wrong way

    Re: Dereliction

The reason the last one works so much better for me is because there is such excellent contrast between beautiful lighting and ugly subject. If you return to the scene of the first two images and capture them in better lighting, they will likely stand up to the quality of the third one.

    Great project!

    Re: Dereliction

Thanks Mike, yes its on my list - problem is the building is so overgrown now with Elder and other trees the window is in almost totally in shade, will take a few visits I think to get there at the right time with more light on it. But as you say I think it will be worth it. The old gate will be easier

I think the wall with the wrought iron fencing has great potential but possibly the light was from a difficult angle and the white balance seems slightly out as well.

Can you reshoot under different conditions?

I should mention that I don't appreciate you posting the third image. I keep looking at it because I like it so much and, as a result, the paint on the door is falling off onto my desk.

thank you Mike, that is very flattering and 'satisfying' coming from you

    Re: Dereliction

The added one does it more for me and I don't know why. I think you're right, abstract art.

I think your photography mechanics are spot on, I just would prefer to find a tie between your dereliction photo quest to some sort of human emotion. Rust and old window glaze is just texture until it's tied to what once was there. It's emotionless. If that makes any sense.

I like that you stick on themes for your shots, Mark. It makes every shot interesting and worth lingering and looking for flaws on the composition which I cannot for the life me, find right now. I love all of these especially with the wrought iron fence and the peeling paint. Whatever you did here on all of them works for me.

    Re: Dereliction

I like the third shot too, Mark. It shows nice contrast between the soft light and coarse textures. I'm not sure about that black space, though - and that could be just my monitor. I think some hint of detail, at least, might improve the shot. Reward the viewer for persevering as the pro.s say.

David, thanks, I know what you mean, hmm, will have to look at that angle
Thanks Izzie, you are very kind
Greg, its black, my though was its empty/gone - thats part of the derelict aspect
    Thanks Matt, appreciated
Grahame, thanks, #2 needs re-doing, I think it wil improve but it will be a case of getting the right lighting on it

    Re: Dereliction

Not kind Mark...just enjoying the thought of "theme shooting" is sort of inspiring for me to prepare for the shoot. The hard part is the thinking what theme to shoot. Sort of hurts the brain, the thinking I mean...
