    Niagara Falls - Winter

Having spent the past couple of days about a 90 minute drive from the Falls, I planned to go there for some winter shooting. Unfortunately, I picked what was probably the worst day of the winter and photographically for doing so.

It was extremely cold out this morning (-25C / -13F), blowing snow, a harsh north wind and heavily overcast conditions. Let's say shooting was not a lot of fun, and a lot of PP required to turn these images into something remotely interesting.

I think these have turned out well! You've certainly captured how cold it is, I want to put on a coat just looking at them

Amazing shots Manfred, through my ignorance I never imaged it would get this cold at the falls!

Nicely done, I can say that I recently experienced the same conditions only at night while visiting the Falls. In my case, my equipment was almost immediately coated with a layer of frost, not so easy to get a shot when your lens is frosted over. You did well under some extreme conditions.

Great shots. I live in Melbourne Australia. We, quite recently had 40 degrees heat. Regarding pic. #2
would it work if the snow was greyish instead of white. Just a thought.

I really like them Manfred for how they show the falls in a cold, cold winter.
My personal favourite is the last one because I've stood at that spot and been mesmerised watching the water just flow over edge there and you've opened my eyes to a whole new dimension of what it must be like watching water and ice going over.

To paraphrase Kipling...you're a crazier man than am I...to take pictures in that weather.
    Regardless, very nice images.

Graham - if you open up the last one in Lightbox, you can see that much of the material going over the Falls near the edge is a mixture of water and large chunks of ice.

Crazy is definitely appropriate. I was only out for about an hour and was well bundled up wearing a merino wool base layer under my clothes, down vest and down-filled jacket, fleece hat and of course gloves. It turns out I managed to get a bit of frost-bite on my nose which is sore and appropriately red...

    Hi Manfred,

I adore all of these, absolutely gorgeous, with the 2nd being my favourite for the sheer beauty of the mist/snow/icicles and flowing water filling the frame. An image I would love to hang on my wall.

Thanks Richard; would you have recognized them without the title though?
