I say this image is a humdinger! (I looked the word up and it also means excellent)
I've never seen a wine spill in such glorious detail/stopped in action. Another incredible image as always!
Very cool shot!
Terry - another stunning image (regardless of the mess you might have made).
Beautifully conceived and executed (as always). Just to keep Mike Buckley happy, you might need consider in putting some kind of disclaimer with this image like; "no real wine was harmed in the creation of this image".
Another outstanding composition, as they say a good picture needs effort put into it.
Nice effort, well worth the mess and I can say that because I don't have to clean it up.
A really neat shot. In regards to getting a new mop, I am wondering about the type of image you could make with the old one
This is a really cool shot! If I'm being REALLY picky, I would consider removing the reflection of the wine glass base.
Whilst agreeing with all the superlatives given to this image, I was asking myself 'How was it achieved?' In particular what were the three components of your final image?
John
Mike will have a fit Terry. Put his mind at rest please. Great photography.
Another great shot Terry!
Terry...all this work! So where did you hang the glass, at the handle? I reckon there should be a sort of little spill that should wrap around the lip of the of the glass to sort of like a real continuation or connection to the short bursts near it...the first shot you composite looks a like it has been too correct...I do not know the word, but I hope you understand what I am trying to say. I say, leave the reflection. It makes the shot. Just a thought...
Sheesh! It seems that at the very moment I was carefully trying to ensure that I didn't spill any wine (though not entirely successfully), you were doing everything you could to make sure you were throwing it or its look-alike all over the place.
Very well done, as always!
Is the liquid-proof diffuser vellum or translucent plexiglass? If so, is it also stain-proof?
Thank you guys! I appreciate you taking the time to view and comment.
And all over the place is the key phrase Mike! When I use a surface the place gets hosed!
For this shot I used a diffusion panel I made out of Translum using PVC pipe for a frame. Very easily cleanable. I can just slide the PVC pipe frame onto a boom arm. I really like frosted plexi. As you know you get a very nice diffusion from it in large part because of its added thickness. It diffuses out from the light source through the thickness of the panel. But also because of that you need more light, which means a longer flash duration. I shot this in the vicinity of 1/9000th t.1 to stop the motion.
Interesting you should mention this Matt! The original composition didn’t have a reflection. Somewhere in post I decided I wanted a reflection to provide more grounding. It just didn’t “feel” right having a reflection of the surface splash but not of the glass. So I had to drop everything and do a re-shoot of one of the components of the composite including the reflection!
John, Izzie? I didn’t hang the glass this time. I threw splashes with it.
The surface is a large piece of picture frame glass with one side shot with a coat of flat black spray paint.
I shot the wine glass/splash by holding the base of the wine glass over the surface and throwing splashes. When I got what I wanted I made note of the angle of the glass in relation to the camera. I then had to shoot the glass again holding it by the top at the same angle so I could have the base without my hand holding it. I re-shot the glass against the glass reflective surface including the reflection of the wine glass. So the wine glass/splash is one component and it is "as shot" with the splash whizzing out of the glass exactly as you see it. The base of the glass and its reflection another. The third component is the splash on the surface.
I have shot somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 shots in the last few days throwing splashes. I’m figuring out what it takes to throw “shaped” splashes such as I did in these shots. The only way I can do it is practice. I shoot the practice throws to work with timing.
