Nikon sells a LOT of those lenses because for most people, convenience trumps ultimate image quality. There's nothing wrong with that. We all have different needs. It is what it is.
For those who are in-fact interested in optimizing image quality, it is worth noting that all of the zoom lenses targeted at the pro market limit zoom range to 3x or less. Notably for Nikon, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, and 200-400. All of the extreme zooms, 18-200, 28-300, etc. make fairly major optical compromises.
On the other hand, in on-line forums such as this we frequently find bold self-affirming statements of such lenses producing as good or better quality images than one of better optical design. Such statements are more refletive of the standard of quality and/or personality of the photographer in question than of the quality of the lens.
