    Bit of the Bubbly

This idea came from Miss Izzie and her post over in the lounge. Looked like something cool to try and it was cold enough yesterday. As long as I was freezing my patootie off might as well put it to good use!

So the kid in me blew bubbles all yesterday and had zero luck, it wasn’t cold enough to freeze fast enough. So I decided to change my tactics today!

Better luck, but still not as cool of results as I had hoped. But at least I had fun doing it and the fun may not be over yet!

If you are going to hang out all day in patootie-freezing weather you might as well have fun doing it!

    Thanks Miss Izzie!

I was expecting to see a bottle of bubbly. Nevertheless, a delightful surprise and creative as always.

I just recently discovered soap bubbles by accident. I same across a child's bubble machine and noticed the reflections inside the bubbles which I blew over the ocean waters to pick up the colours of the ocean. Now I just might have to try blowing soap bubbles into my freezer.

    Re: Bit of the Bubbly

Thank you guys! It wasn’t really cold enough to go with my original plan as it turned out (and Miss Izzie's original post)! It didn’t take me long to realize that, but just between us?

I was having fun blowing bubbles into the air so I blew off taking photos and blew bubbles all day! Okay. So my mental capacity is that of a three year old! In fact, haven’t done it since I was actually chronologically (instead of mentally) that age! I hope to God no one saw me!

But? If I wanted a shot, any shot, it was obvious I was going to have to change direction and get a new plan!

I noticed in a recent shot you posted Christina! Which, bye the way, I totally dug.

It was extremely cool that you took that shot off on an entirely different direction than what I have seen you post. Even better that you posted it where you did. My wool hat would be off to you except it is still keeping my bald head from freezing from today's exploits!

    Hi Terry,

I was also expecting a bit of fizz

I didn't initially realise these were frozen bubbles, which led me to wonder if there were a way to demonstrate the fact - could something (obviously fairly lightweight) be balanced atop the bubbles? I think it would give added impact to the shot - until a viewer realised how it was achieved.

Perhaps a small Lego figure, or if that's too big or heavy, a figure as used for populating model railroads. Or something incongruous to water/bubbles? - but I won't ask you to balance a needle/pin

Whatever it is, it should be 'on' it, not frozen 'in' to it.

    Hi Dave,

I’m not too sure one could place something on top of the bubbles but it’s a good idea. All my bubbles were very delicate and they always broke at some point anyway.

I was hoping for some good ice crystals forming but I didn’t get quite what I hoped for.

This shot was a 10 shot focus stack, which I don’t think was enough, but was all I could get before the bubbles broke. I had to work fast!

I was also fighting a bit of wind, which didn’t help matters. Maybe under different conditions it might be a different shoot!

Great composition and light! Rather than being just a series of bubbles, they appear unified. The combination of bubbles reminds me of what a very large and fancy igloo with transparent roof lines might look like.

    Thanks Mike!

I learned how to blow bubbles inside of bubbles! I was ecstatic!

I am also apparently easily amused!

Now...now...Christina, you are trying to put some more thoughts in this child's head...the wifey-do will push him out the house again for leaving the freezer door wide opened too long while he plays with bubbles towards it just to get this special effects he was aiming for.... And guess what he would do? -- buy his own freezer!!!! so he can play to his heart's content...

Now...now... Izzie, that was the whole idea! Fueling the child's creativity will surely be to the benefit of all of us.

    Izzie, Christina?

    You two are killing me!

I got back to this thread and couldn’t stop chuckling!

I appreciate you two taking such a keen interest in child rearing (meaning me I guess)! Or your contribution to the delinquency of said! Fine line!

But I know Wifey-Poo appreciates it too! She, by her own admission, needs all the help she can get in the rearing of the child she married!

When I grow up (and that seems unlikely!) I want to be a photographer just like you guys!

    You two are my Heros!

    Hi Terry,

My apologies for my contribution to taking this thread off track. I edited my initial reply because of that. Actually "this child of photography" is intrigued by reflections in soap bubbles (first encounter and clueless). Anyhow I'm following this thread and I'm hopeful that you will be posting more bubble threads of yours to come with the hope of learning more about the subject.

I'm going to post a learning bubble in a new thread and I hope you'll pass by.

    Re: Bit of the Bubbly

    Christina? Please?

Absolutely no need for any apologies! You take the thread anywhere you want and I’ll follow!

I love the off track? It’s great to laugh and you guys made that happen! Very cool!

I try (and mostly fail) not to take myself (or anything else) too seriously! If it wasn’t fun I’d be out of here in a Heartbeat!

The fact that you guys can come in and yuck it up is awesome! And I want to be a part of that with you! You will never have to apologize for having fun on my threads. I will owe you one if you don’t!

    I’ll pass through.

Thank you Terry. It's easy for me to get wrapped up in having fun, so nice to know. That said I'm hopeful that there will be some serious discussion on your bubble photography. If not on this thread perhaps on your next thread.

On that note... How does one blow bubbles inside of other bubbles?

I took a little hop over to your bubble thread Christina.

We are going about this in two different ways. I blew bubbles with one of those round thingies that you dip into soapy water and blow. I don’t have a machine.

Well, as fun as it was it wasn’t working for what I wanted to do so I had to get a new plan.

So I set up a surface (clear plexi in this case) and blew bubbles on the surface. I took one of those straw-like coffee stirrers and dipped one end into the bubble solution. Put my finger over the other end to hold the liquid in the straw. Put the end (with the solution) down against the surface and gently blew bubbles onto the surface. You can blow one set of bubbles this way and before it freezes you can repeat the process only stick the coffee stirrer into the first set of bubbles. Most of the time it won’t break the existing bubbles if they haven’t been frozen yet.

Just blow more bubbles inside the first!

That’s all there is to it!

Told ya I was easily amused!
