    Camera upgrade and crop factor

    Hi all,

    I am planning on upgrading my 7D to a 6D or 5D MkIII and while I would love to get the forthcoming EF 11-24mm f/4L USM I doubt I could afford it.

    For landscapes I use a Canon 10-22mm at 10mm on the 7D. Am I right in thinking that a 16-35mm f2.8L IS USM at 16mm on a full frame camera will give me the same image, edge to edge?

    Yes, the 16-35 on FF will be nearly identical field of view as the 10-22 on your 1.6 crop body.

    Yes, the 16mm on a full frame body should give you the same coverage as the 10mm does on your 7D. (1.6x x 10 = 16)

    If the reason that you would like the forthcoming EF 11-24mm f/4L USM is because it is considerably wider than the EF 16-35mm lens, you might consider either of the full frame Tokina wide angle lenses: 12-28mm f/4 (IF) DX or the 11-16mm f/2,8 (IF) DX.

    I have not used either of these lenses but, I do use the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 Mk.I lens on my 7D and like it very much.

    I have not researched the image quality of the two Tokina DX lenses but the 11-16mm f/2.8 DX runs $479 USD at B&H in New York and gets a four and a half star review from 106 reviewers... The 12-28mm f/4 DX runs $449 USD at B&H. It gets 4.5 stars from 25 reviewers...

    My Tokina is built like a truck and I love it!

    10mm on the 7D sensor width of 22.3mm gives an angle of 2.23 radians (128 degs).
    16mm on full frame width of 36mm gives an angle of 2.25 radians (129 degs).

    Close enough for Government Work, I'd say . . .

    Hard to go past the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM. I like the specs and price on the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro FX and the Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM II but the fixed hood and protruding lens would mean (I think) that I could not use my Lee filters.

    On the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM I can use the filters, with the added bonus of being 77mm like my 24-105 L. The more expensive f2.8 is tempting but its 82mm and thus complicates the whole filter thing. No big drama but I don't think that getting the bigger f2.8 stop is worth the additional $500 when 99% of what I do is landscapes on a tripod.

    I'd love the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM (again the filter issue) but for >$3500 its a tall order. I could by a 5DS for that....maybe....

    I thought the tokina's were all for crop sensors - though designated for pro. Or have I missed something.
    Until Canon launch announcement of the 11mm 24mm I understood the Sigma 12-24mm was the widest full from rectolinear lens, though there is the corresponding 8mm - 16mm for crop sensor.

    I use a Sigma 12-24, and I like it, but always feel vulnerable with hits huge exposed front element, yet alone a £3000 lens with no protection.
