Hi Nessco20, do you have a first name we can address you by? First post and an image, great work. I can see whay you didn't call him Blackie. It would have been nice to see more of Ginger. That's not an egg tree in the background is it? Post another shot when you get a chance.

I think it looks better in BW. That splash of green in TR corner doesn't really fit in with the dog (nice dog!). I also find those two bright areas behind the dog distracting. I converted to BW and burnt the bright areas. Your exposure seems a little low too. I increased it.
Well done for posting a shot so soon.
Hi Janis: Stella is a beauty. Great shot. I don't know anything about Aperture, so I can't help out on Post Processing. Perhaps a Mac user will chime in.
I agree with what Rob said about the background. If it was my shot though, I would be very happy with it and leave it as is, but next time I would be trying to get it so the background was not split between the trees and the buildings. Of course you have to get Stella to co-operate. I don't find it overly distracting in this shot, because the focus is so obviously on Stella that my eye is not really drawn to the background.
I like what Rob has done with the conversion, and Stella looks great in colour or B&W, but in this case I prefer the colour version.
Glad to see another Canadian here at the forum - Welcome - hope to see more shots soon.

Us boys have to stick together. And we've got to keep these colonials in their place!
I like the B&W (but I probably would anyway). I see what Wendy's saying, but I think Stella fades into the background on the colour version. The B&W throws all the attention on to her and makes the image 'pop'.
And welcome on board the CiC train, Janis. We're all very, very nice.
Thanks Wendy. I didn't mind the colour so much as the fact that it was split. I think what bothers me most is the shallow depth of field and the fact that her nose is so fuzzy. Is no one else bothered by this or are y'all going easy on me because I'm a newbie?
Don't hold back. I've got a lot to learn and, with each passing year, less time to learn it in.
Stella is a great dog, and a great subject. No question, though, that there are some backgounds she doesn't wear well.
Your fellow Canuk,
Janis
Hi Janis: I don't know about anyone else, but the fuzzy nose doesn't bother me. I didn't even notice, but I suppose it could be sharper. If you have a sharpening function in Aperture that might make it better. Like I say I don't know Aperature so I can't advise you there. Anyone??
No one else has mentioned it though, so I'm thinking you are the only one bothered by it. I don't think anyone is going easy on you. I've found everyone here to be pretty honest but always gentle and well meaning with critique.
Wendy
Hi Janis,
I am a colonial too so I am going for the colour version but I accept the issues with teh background and that is for another shoot. If you look at the B&W version Rob did you will note he also sharpened the image further. This is removed most of the fuzziness. In this type of shots the eyes are the most important so as long as they are sharp you generally fine. Well done and welcome to CiC.
If you check with Wendy you will find I am also an honorary Canuk.
