Everything else on the same plane as the eye looks sharp. It looks like the softness may actually be a characteristic of the iris not having distinct edges.

Barbara, you'll have to determine that based on the full size image. The size posted isn't quite large enough to tell.

Thanks Dan, I thought it was in focus but I will look at it closer. I use a 21 inch Mac screen so start with a pretty large image.

Dan, determining the same plane without knowing the angle of the head makes it a bit confusing and it may very well be a characteristic of the iris but looking at 'Alien' I see a distinct difference between the two.

It looks like "all of the above". Downloading it in this resolution reveals:
1) it is in focus based on surrounding features
2) the eye does have some dark "bleed" around both pupil and OD of the iris though minor
3) it does benefit from a slight bit of sharpening. not only the eye but the entire head looks a bit improved IMO
