    A day at the Showjumping

It was the first competition for the year for me, our students performed very well.

Where to stand is the challenge at these events, there are many a 'wealthy parent' armed with their 7DMark II giving advice, which may or may not prove helpful.

The school which hosted this comp' has amazing facilities, their own indoor arena, would you believe!
Although Prince Charles did attend here at one time, so I guess it figures :roll eyes:

I try to not always just include clearing the jumps images in my set, so I have some variety, shame about the fire hydrant, though.

The next challenge is to make small jumps appear larger... achieved by laying on the ground, not too much of that gets done by the parents mentioned above..
    A day at the Showjumping

The riders are taught to look toward the next jump, as their horse is clearing the current one, this sometimes has the horse looking to camera, but the rider not... sometimes these things do line up nicely though..
    A day at the Showjumping

I am not a fan of 'the double' or 2 jumps in quick succession, as even though it provides 2 chances of a good shot, the horse has to be up & down quickly, I did like the colours on this double though.

My favourite jump is the 2 fences close together, combination jump. The 'air time' is the longest, when the horse/rider are clearing this combination, whig is helpful when these are young riders not Olympians & the jumps are not that high.

    & finally... 1 for concentration..
    A day at the Showjumping

    & enjoyment!

    Nice job, Kay!

I love shots like these! Despite the parental obstacles, you have done a great job and gotten great angles. The young man clearing the oxer is very intent as well.

Very nice series and very nice to see people outside in the sunshine really enjoying themselves. They're all so good I couldn't choose a favourite.

I have a video here at home of my then 16 YO daughter in a show jumping event at a pony club gymkhana with one hand on the reins and the other holding her helmet on because the strap came undone as she landed after the first jump.
To her relief not only was she not stopped or disqualified but she won the event.

    Kay,
All are very good, however, "air time" is great.

I went to a small town for their annual race and games day.
I had to laugh at the contrast here.

These kids and some adults don't have saddles, ride in gumboots or bare feet, no hard hats, sometimes even not what you would call a bridle.

Very nice series, Kay... the air jump is very interesting to say the least but bugger if I can find a favourite amongst this set...So is Chucky still big deal in Oz? I sort of forgot to ask that question when I was there a week ago...I am following the new royals though...

Jill -- New Zealanders are a rough lot, eh? i like #2 for the expression of the face of the rider...funny really...

I shouldn't generalise, I really should say only the southern hemisphere owners
for some reason their 7DII's can only be worked on auto...strangest thing

A sort of serious point on that though, is the sheer frustration of thinking of people owning one and then using it on Auto. Now I know Canon probably don't care. They've got their sale.

But to think of what that camera is capable ... and people use it on Auto. It's a complete waste of money. I think I'm fairly enthusiastic and I'm still learning how to drive it properly. Why on earth get something like a 7DMkII and use it on Auto? I'd want to rip it out of their hands and give it to some enthusiastic person who could use it but can't afford it.

Re: A day at the Showjumping

Thankyou everyone for viewing & commenting, it was a fun day. Our parents are always pleased to see someone from school come out on the weekend & support the students.
Golly Jill! Our safety police would have a fit if they went to that event, but it does look exciting.
Donald, I tried not to be cynical on the 'gear' side, but when the same people with their expensive kit locked on the green square, tell me I'm in the wrong spot, I get a bit grumpy.
They never shoot into the sun, (is their main lesson they shared with me) so sadly I guess they'll never see the pony's mane & tail lit with late afternoon natural rim lighting.
But all good, I just smile & go on about my business. I'm not the sort to tell random strangers how it's done, must be a skill set I missed
