    Photography outing planning tools

For some time now I have used the 'Photographers Ephemeris' for sun and recently moon data along with detailed tide tables as aids in planning some of my shoots.

Today someone sent me a very useful graphical real time 'Wind' and weather forecaster.

My present interest in it is due to the cyclone coming our way but seeing wind direction and force predictions in such an easy format is going to be quite useful.

I'd like to know how accurate it is but it is fascinating to watch, thanks for the link.

Agree, nice tae watch but it is very inaccurate compared tae the weather station at the outdoor centre, half a mile up the road from me.

Accuracy is going to be something that is subjective and dependant very much upon what info is available and accessible locally, localised geographical features and to what standards and frequency data is updated.

Living here I have found a major difference in predictions that are easily available to those as I was used to when being in more civilised places

Speaking of accuracy, one morning last week I checked the current and predicted temperatures for the day. The current temperature was 10 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the lowest temperature being predicted for the day. That discrepancy didn't inspire confidence in the information.

The national weather service claims the weather station here is at the airport. If so in must be in a hanger.

I depend on the "weather rock" in my garden to tell me the weather...

If the rock is wet, it's raining.
If the rock is swinging, the wind is blowing.
If the rock casts a shadow, the sun is shining.
If the rock does not cast a shadow and is not wet, the sky is cloudy.
If the rock is not visible, it is foggy.
If the rock is white, it is snowing.
If the rock is coated with ice, there is a frost.
If the ice is thick, it's a heavy frost.
If the rock is bouncing, there is an earthquake.
If the rock is under water, there is a flood.
If the rock is warm, it is sunny.
If the rock is missing, there was a tornado.
If the rock is wet and swinging violently, there is a hurricane.
If the rock has white splats on it, watch out for birds.

I never realized until seeing Richard's eloquent explanation of a weather rock the great void that has occurred all these decades in my life because I have never owned one.

But if you are between a rock and hard place, how can you tell the weather, Richard....just curious....
