    They have a loud grunt as well. Nicely captured, my only chance to photograph has been in a zoo and I appreciated the separation.

    I do not think they are grunting; they sing!! Besides that, they are "cowards" when meeting humans.

    Might I suggest the term 'ugly' between species just doesn't apply? They are what they are and we are what we are.

    I'm in the ugly camp. And not only is it ugly, it has yellow teeth and their vocalizations are downright creepy.

    I do agree, that too often human traits are used in description of animals. I personally do like hyenas a lot. And their sounds are the "lullaby of Serengeti" for me.
