Locks in B&W for Mark (mknittle) as promised.

As I promised Mark (mknittle) in Nandakumar's thread named 'Locks' , I'm uploading four B&W conversions of the same lock. When Mark asked me to upload a B&W conversion of my coloured lock image, I didn't know much about SEP2 and I was only able to apply the presets in the software. After reading the books about Nik Software and about B&W photography, I think I'm able to make B&W conversions more consciously.

The first three of the images were edited in SEP 2 without using any presets . I have to tell you that examining presets helps a lot to learn the functions of the sliders in the software . So although I read a book about the software, I have examined the presets too.

I edited the forth image in PS CC.

BTW, the original image is a JPG and an old one. Because I wasn't shooting raw when I first started photography.

    C&C are appreciated as always

I like the grit of #1 although I don't like the cepia tone flooding the highlights nor that saturated overall. The border is such a personal choice, I could like it or not. The overall frame is fantastic and you obviously have a great eye.

I like the grit in #3 but I don't know about the edge treatment, glow.

    #2 and #4...nah.

I hope you don't mind, but this is my preference with the duotone look. ...and I love the grittiness of it too.

It is a great image for a whole host of treatments. The white borders look old and faded to me .I like them
I also like your treatment Dave.

#4 effect seems either the lock and the chain were burning hot or it is almost an inverted image...I like all four of the treatment. Very different.

Thank you very much David. I like your edit very much . Those are my first learning practises and while toning the image I moved the balance slider to the left and the toning effect I applied to the dark areas of the image became more dominant in the image, that's why you see a saturated and strong sepia tone. But it was good practise for me.

I will start editing some landscapes with SEP 2 soon, because I think I'm able to use Nik Software more efficiently now. I would be happy to see your comments on my landscape trials too

Thank you Isabel Because it was a learning practise I tried to edit the same image with different settings. You are so right about #4, it is an inverted image, I made it with PS CC. I read about the LAB channels in a book and there was an example of inverting images for different looks. So, I wanted to give it a try. I inverted the lightness channel in LAB channels and then I made a default B&W conversion. The effect in the image above looks a bit artificial to me , but it might suit another image better.

Very nice series Binnur. Great composition. The treatment is not for me but that's not a criticism as they are fantastic photos. I just prefer a more natural look but I am weird like that.

Thanks for looking and commenting Chris I don't know what direction my photography will go to , because I haven't spent as long years as you have done in photography yet. So, for the time being I keep learning and trying different things. May be I will have preferences like you in the future , but I don't even know yet if I prefer color or B&W . I think it will all be clear in time

I rarely do much in LAB anymore other than sharpen. If I need a bit of sharpening, I convert to LAB and sharpen only the lightness channel. Then when I convert back to my RGB setting, I select all, copy, then go back into my history to the before I converted to LAB and past the sharpened image on top of the original. That way I can reduce opacity if I have it to sharp. Then simply merge layers. ...anyway, sharpening in LAB on the lightness channel doesn't halo the edges of the entire images as much and usually does the job.

Thanks again for letting me play with your images. It's really a great shot!
