Thanks Antonio, good point about the lack of DOF, this was a failed attempt at hyperfocal distance focusing. My focus doesn't stretch to the horizon, I tried to set focus at about 1/3 up the image (as a "rough rule of thumb"). I will adjust this for future images, thanks.

It is a light touch HDR, well spotted! I like the way HDR accents the clouds. (a personal taste - not for everyone, I know).

How does one get a landscape that is sharp all the way from front to back ?

The article in Luminous Landscape is also quite interesting which Cambridge in Colour refers.

Then, get out try for yourself and post here two images with the DOF controlled.

I do not have a GPS device but I wish to geotagg my photos when I travel anywhere in the World or even inside my own country.

I have seen this Bilora (I am afraid I do not read or speak German but only Portuguese, French and English) which looks pretty interesting.
In spite of being written in German I could understand it's interest because I read the downloadable guide in English.

I also found this Geotager Pro not to mention but two :):)

And... last minute one: this very cool review by Ivar on Solmeta GPS tagging unit DP-GPS N1. However it looks it work sonly with Nikons

Sorry I cannot help you with the GPS Tagging question Antonio, but perhaps you can help me with a continual problem I have in the area I live.

Most of the countryside here are either flat fields or wood and forests. My problem is the woods and forests - there is just too much fine detail in the leaves and twigs etc. and I am finding this fine detail is a big distraction in the finished image. BUT I still want to retain the overall sharpness of the image - am I asking the impossible, or are there any "tricks of the trade" to counter this problem?

Here is an example of what I mean...the top third of the image lacks depth and is a real mess! It is a pseudo-HDR processed image (single exposure) as I generally like the "pop" that HDR processing gives.

I can't help you, sorry, I only use GPs on my car and on my bike in order to find/record the path! :)
Perhaps you could post it in the "Tips&Techniques" section.. it should be more visible at least...

I think your image doesn't lack depth and it is not a real mess. I like it :) Good DOF, colours etc. :)
To avoid this so called mess on the trees, may be you can create a new layer above this one with a mask to conceal the HDR bellow or at least to try to do so. You can also try to change the blending modes on this new layer to experiment and see what comes up with a different opacity.
I know little of Photoshop. :o
Another idea which comes to my mind now, is to darken a bit the image maintaining however it's brightness in the required areas.
I hope this to be of some poor help. :)
Others know much more than I do. :)

It is an unusual angle but it works. I like it :) Colours are OK, definition OK...
Perhaps you could clone the little triangle of sky. But if you are going to give more room to the main subject it will appear bigger.:o You would have then to get around this problem somehow. :rolleyes:

A scene from a rest stop parking lot in rural Japan. Most of the PP time was spent trying to compensate for a green color cast that appeared after doing a single image HDR runthrough in Photomatix. I have trouble with color casts - I've discovered I'm 'color-cast blind.' Maybe I over-compensated dealing with the green one because now I seem to detect a pinkish one, but I don't know. I'll start over if I have to. What do you think?

Antonio has given more depth with his version, Rob. However, if you only want part of the image to pop, as you do with this photo, wouldn't it be simpler to avoid HDR in the first place and selectively sharpen, dodge/burn etc, instead? It seems a long way round to create an HDR image and then try to reduce the HDR effect! You'll still have the original pre-HDR version to play with?

Its a very nice image, by the way - possibly a tad more foreground interest could have worked well but I like it.

Someone (I think Arith), suggested an Orton Effect. This is one variation of the orton effect on your image...I also played around with some gradient fills and would probably pursue that more than ortonizing on this type of image. You may also consider desaturating your greens just a bit.
