My wife thinks he's funny looking...

However, I think that Dominic is really cute. Unusual looking but cute. He is a Maltese + Yorkshire Terrier mix and has the most unusual eyes...

Charlie Hebdo is a Maltese - Poodle mix. He was so frightened when I took him from the carrier that he ripped open the top of my hand with his nails. Now after a bit over two weeks with us, he is happy, relaxed and friendly...

His eyes is interesting...seriously, he is begging to be loved. Look at the combination of his face from his eyes to his pursed lips. Then, look at the change in his eyes when he does learn how to love again...

Well,I have seen Dominic. And he looks really cute and very cuddly, with a high degree of intelligence, having a nice high and wide forehead. So, Mrs. Richard thinks he is funny looking? Okay, she is welcome to that opinion. But, does Mrs. Richard scrub as well as he does?

I agree with her. He is kind of funny looking. But cute. Both excellent photos. You've got your system down for shooting the small dogs. Nice job.

The funnier looking, the more endearing it seems!

My niece loves Pugs. Thinks they are cute!

Looks to me that they ran into a brick wall at 90 mph nose first!

    What’s not to love?

    Excellent shots as usual Richard.

Dominic has something going on in his mind. The eyes seem to tell a bit of a story, very endearing for sure. Well done.

Dominic looks a little worried, but adorable. You certainly do these very, very well.

It has become a system. I even use a different CF card for each dog and while I am shooting, I place the shot CF cards on a piece of paper with the dog's names written. That way as I transfer the files from CF card to computer, I can keep track of the dog on the disk and name that batch.

After my wife has spruced up the dogs (different dogs need different coat care) it takes me 15-20 minutes to shoot each dog.

The background is various colors of fleece thrown over an arm chair. I sit in a rolling office chair so I am able to shoot at close to the dog's eye level. I use my 7D at ISO 160 with one of my Canon hotshoe flashes on camera and bounced off the ceiling modified with a Joe Demb Flash Diffuser Pro. Fill light is from a quad CFL daylight fluorescent softbox, just a few feet from the dog. I use an Ott Light for a background light. The Ott is my wife's reading light and she always has it near the chair. On day I thought, "what the heck, I'll try this for a BG light" The mixture of the three light sources seems to cause no problems. I shoot on auto white balance and use a WhiBal Card, correcting the color balance in ACR using the white balance eye dropper.

The secret is to use a thin show lead. My wife controls the dog with this lead which I then clone out. I couldn't shoot without her assistance.

I shoot large dogs outdoors. This is Coco who is a darling Labradoodle (we also do doodle rescue). We fostered this girl over a year ago and have doggie-sat for her several times. She was easy to shoot because the is so obedient. I just put her on a sit and shot. Other dogs are not as easy...

My wife thinks he's funny looking...

I love my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and use it for all my dog and people portraiture. I also use fill flash for most outdoor portraiture,

Re: My wife thinks he's funny looking...

These are the normal quality images that some shelters use to get their dogs adopted.

My wife thinks he's funny looking...

Decent images will give a dog a better change of adoption. I "think" that one of the above dogs is Charlie. At least, that is the group he entered the shelter with...

I think Dominic is really cute as well and Charlie Hebdo is very much like my Maltese-Bichon, right down to the brownish paws which can be reduced to almost no brown at all just by adding a little plain yoghurt to their diet. At least it worked with mine.
