Lovely shot of a lovely bird, my only critique would be that the crop is a bit tight on the right hand side?
Good technical execution and a nice BG.
Possibly the food is fractionally on the bright side but the head and feather detail are excellent.
I'm not really concerned by the right side because the tail is starting to go a little soft there and being close to the edge it doesn't seem to notice so much.
It does go off into a minor read because of the tails softness, but I would have to adjust it, because of the tree stump's Ellipse goes tangent with the edge of the picture as it circles around, wouldn't be noticeable either if it wasn't on the highlighted plane of the stump. Also by extending out to the right the over all composition I think would be better, not for what it does to the right but what that would do in terms of the center. This all being said I noticed it, but I wouldn't have said anything because it isn't that big of a deal in reference to this shot.
Dave, this is an excellent capture.
There is one aesthetic thing I'd definitely tackle if mine - I would clone out that sharp, straight hair/fibre that seems to be falling from the beak to the stump.
There is also one technical thing; you also need to downsize (to no more than 1000px height, width accordingly) and sharpen, as per the "recommended method" in post #6 of this thread; HELP THREAD: How can I post images here?
Hope that helps, Dave
Hi Dave: The empty background works quite well here as it really emphasizes the bird's head. Very nice feather detail and it is always more interesting when these creatures are doing something, such as eating, rather than just sitting still.
Awfully nice. The US nuthatches are notorious for navigating tree trunks head down - same in the UK?
Dave, nice capture, was just about to post one I caught yesterday,Mark, same here, head down on tree trunks....
