    Cactus: PP experiment

Inspired by recent posts by James and (Alaska) Dan about sharpening without increasing noise, I tried the following with this image of a cactus that I took in California a few days ago. The steps were:

Tonality adjustments and B&W conversion in LR.
Move to Photoshop. Create a high-pass layer. pick a large radius for some dramatic sharpening of the edges. Apply nose reduction to the high-pass layer. Blend with the hard light mode. Move back to LR. Do a bit of general noise reduction to smooth out grain on the flat surfaces.

C&C welcome, of course--about both the processing and the image.

I have no idea what this particular plant looks like so it's hard to comment on the processing. It does look nice and sharp w/out artifacts or noise. If the real leaves are that smooth then it's darn well done.

While this shot looks nice enough, it's really hard for me to say how successful the treatments have been without knowing what you started with.

good point. Here is the original, imported into Lightroom, with only two changes: lightroom's default capture sharpening (25, radius 1.0), and conversion to black and white.

Great concept, Dan. Great eye. I hope you continue to work it.

Good subject well processed, Dan. The prickly contrasted with the smooth, and black against white.

Thanks, all. Most of what I got on that trip are obvious discards, but I have a few more to play with.
