I was finding some of the Deer Flies (Chrysops species) in the woods last year but never actually managed a photo. On one occasion I was concentrating on photographing another species and when I looked up there was a Deer Fly sitting on my flash unit while watching me!
Lol Geoff, I thought for a minute there you were going to say one was biting you
They don't seem to be too bad for biting; unlike those pesky Cleg Horseflies which are every where at that site!
The deer flies we have in the Adirondacks are very bad for biting. They are amazingly persistent. The first sign is usually hearing them flying around your head. It makes no difference how often and hard you try to swat or how far or fast you walk, they stay with you unless you manage to manage to them dead on. so it's really ironic that they are actually quite beautiful.
Great macros as always... Extraordinary detail, dof and colour.
My favourite is #3 for the beauty of the fly and the flower(prettier in #3), followed by #5 but #3 is my first choice for the sheer beauty of the scene.
I used to hate those Cleggs when I was in the U,K, Geoff, although the Horse-Deer Fly's here are just as nasty!
Thank you Christina, much appreciated, #4 and #5 are Dan's images
