Cricket Practice - Set 2

Following on from my last set of cricket shots I sorted through the remainder and cropped them down as far as I could with the intention to emphasise the action. In addition a bit more contrast to the images and some mild vignetting, I think it helped.

No 1 - 1/800, f/6.3, ISO360, 400mm


No 2 - 1/1250, f/7.1, ISO280, 390mm


No 3 - 1/800, f/6.3, ISO500, 400mm


No 4 - A rework of previously posted one with tighter crop

Nice series, I think the first looks odd with the one player partially cropped, but sometimes you have to work with what is there.

#4 for me as well. You can really see the bowler's effort, the ball's hurtling down and I can almost see the action the batsman's taking as he prepares to strike that ball.
it's a pity in #3 that the bowler has partially disappeared behind the batsman.

Thanks John, I have a few similar ones and put it down to not concentrating enough on the composition. This first trial was very much about the techs and from it I have learnt what I can achieve at the settings w.r.t DOF, freezing movement, hand holding at the FL and cropping ability.

it's a pity in #3 that the bowler has partially disappeared behind the batsman.

I think this is going to remain a problem shooting from that angle Graham because if shot earlier there going to be less batsman action and possibly the ball hidden by him. Lots of variations and I need to study some 'pro' images

Did you have any opportunity to move to the other side, or did you have slip fielders obscuring your view? It may have helped with #3.

Fortunately there's lots of opportunities for me locally John for both cricket and rugby and I'm going to see if I can somehow get access to our sports stadium where there's a lot of athletics.

Thanks David. This is a first try and at this location I have access all around, the only limitations being choosing the best looking background. I think it's going to be a matter of which shots work from each position and once known aim for those by moving locations during the game.

One thing I learnt today from reading is that nothing else matters as long as the face and expression is clear, whether bowler or batsman.
