    Not having read the comments I can not answer your question asking for a comparison between the picture here presented and the "potential" picture taken by another camera. I can only say: to me the background should be black.

    I do apply a black background to some of my shots but I am rather fond of the bamboo fence background in this shot.

    You don't have to worry about exporting RAW images, once your editing program converts the RAW file you won't need it again until you choose to re-edit the original file. If Picasa doesn't allow you to export as a TIFF, you can do so after opening in another editor. Sounds like you are saying Picasa only allows you to convert a RAW file to jpeg?

    As I understand it that's right. Basically I use Picasa to import and crop because it has the easiest cropping setup I have yet to find. But I could get more comfortable with Gimp crop.
