General Patton Colorized by Zak Kogut

    Hi Everybody,

So it's been awhile since I've posted a colorization. I found this cool photo of General Patton this morning and figured I'd be worth spending a few hours this rainy afternoon coloring it. I found the jacket in a museum in Kentucky with an up to date photo so I used that for color references. Enjoy.

Pretty good, his face colour looks a bit tanned/orange for me.

Probably because your screen isn't calibrated or is due for one. I just recalibrated this morning before I colored this and double checked on my phone just now after you posted this...You might want to invest in a Spyder Pro 4 for screen calibrating. Thanks for looking!

What you have done really brings the man to life.

I like the fact that the colorization is not overdone.

Thank you! I'm glad you don't find it overbearing especially in the background which took me awhile to look natural. Thanks for looking!

Very well done again Zac. Mind you I also think his skin tones are a little too tanned. I've looked at it on 2 iPads, my phone and two monitors and although the tones vary a little he's still tanned. Mind you maybe he was and so this is what the old shot comes up like as a result.
The comparison between your avatar and the General shows a distinct difference.
In the end of course I'm with Donald, it's very, very good.

Thanks for letting me know. I too have looked on my Ipad, Galaxy Tab and my wifes computer just to see what you're talking about and I think that my warming filter may make his skin look a little dark. I've corrected this and reuploaded the picture. Thanks for the heads up and thank you for looking!

No my screen isn't calibrated, but the new version looks much better.

Glad to hear it. I figured out that my warming filter was giving weird results. Thanks for the input!

    Hi Zak,

    Well done again.

What impresses me, which I particularly noticed on the General (above), is that you manage to retain uncoloured 'paper damage' artefacts, hairs, spots, etc., both black and white - making the result so believable.

As someone above has already said; I (too) am in awe of your skill.

Dave, thanks for the kind words. I overlay my colors and use masks so that the photo isn't altered in any way other than the colors I'm adding. I've sent this finished photo to a museum in California that has contacted me saying that they want to use it, which is a first. I'm glad you like my work and thanks for looking!

You've got talent, there's no doubt about that! Nicely done indeed and I'm going to make a comment, but when one knows of how the art was made, it's so much easier to interject opinions.

I think before I desaturate the skin tones any, I might try adding a bit of warmth or subtract a bit of the coolness from his eye brows and hair. They seem to contrast to much with the environment. Also, I might peck away at the bit of green there at the top right of the trees. Looks like a little green color is covering sky instead of foliage. Lastly, I might desaturate the or lessen the warmth of the tree trunk. It looks a little to warm for the overcast environment.

    Great job!
