    Portrait of a Jungle Mynah

Playing around I spent a while trying to capture some shots of Mynah birds invading my garden. I have set up an area where I can sit comfortably undercover and wait for what comes along but have learnt it's not the best location for late afternoon due to the lower light.

Jungle Mynah, Fiji - (Acridotheres fuscus)

    1/100, f/5.6, ISO1600, 400mm, uncropped.

Having lived here now for a number of years I had not realised we actually have two distinctive species of Myna, the common and the jungle, easily differentiated once you know what to look for.

Lessons learnt here are the surprising limited DoF that's going to be unavoidable in the lighting conditions that I did not think too bad.

Grahame wonderful detail on the bird and an all around great shot! It would have been nice to have the second foot but sometimes we can't have it all

Thanks Barbara. I was happy with the detail considering the extreme settings so it can really only get better, hopefully

Unfortunately a grab shot as these guys do not stay still for long, but promise I'll try harder

Yep it's the feathers I have so wanted to capture David. I'll try and train one to do a full pose for me

It's all been said Grahame. It's a great capture spoiled only by the missing bits. Beautifully sharp around the eye in particular and that's important.

Very nicely done, Grahame...you said this is the jungle variety, how does the common one looks like?

Hi Izzie, no decent captures of the common one yet but it's recognised by the bald patch which is yellow around its eye and no tuft at the head of the beak.

I was going to send this one to the trash bin but it made me laugh so hopefully it will give you a smile today

Mummy said we could eat seeds?

Considering that it's a Jungle Mynah, it seems that it is your garden that has invaded the mynah birds.

I would not trash it, but make more of a picture out of it - along your laughs.

Yes, I was surprised by the narrowness of DoF Grahame - the eye and beak are just a tad softer than the feathers (where I guess the AF point was).

PS - you haven't added your new 'baby' to the list in your signature

    Enjoy the new lens!

    Cheers, Dave

Not quite correct Mike, half my garden is a jungle

I tried cropping from left and bottom Erwin to make things a bit more pronounced but could not make my mind up Erwin.

I think it's the feather detail that can be achieved Binnur that makes a rather mundane bird more interesting.

Pleased you saw the funny side of No 2, I had not noticed it until on the screen. It was just a shot to see what I could achieve.

You are welcome Izzie, pictures do not always need to be serious
