Big and Small

This is one from last year, I am looking at my old pictures to play with post processing - I pushed this through DxO to output as a .dng file then played a bit more in Elements 11 - final output to a .jpg, something I will play with some more but going to have to get a proper workflow written down and then tweak it to get to a final workflow that is good and repeatable. Work In progress

Anyway, happy to put it up here for review and comments

f8 1/400sec at iso 200 with sigma 150 macro lens, hand held.

From that angle you got me wondering about the identity of the Helophilus. The hind leg colouration looks like it might have more black; like H. hybridus. But going by the amount of black on the hind edge of tergite 2, I would say H. pendulus male.

Otherwise, a good clear shot.

I like it, although I would like to open it up a bit without loosing detail in the pedals. I'm afraid it would be almost impossible to open up without masking out the bee only. It just seems a bit dark over all but the delicate details in the pedals would be nice to keep.

Izzie, when I get a repeatable output -I will let you know, I think this was a Bo Bo - I exported it from DxO after adjustments as a .dng file so not sure the adjustments were carried forward into the image in Elements, it looks brighter in DxO as a .nef raw file. I will keep playing and try to capture the workflow so if I get it right I can repeat it

David, thanks, it was a balance to brighten it up more and lose detail or leave at this level, I chose to go with this as the colour on the Hoverfly is more life accurate

The little critter, Dave, is facing away from us so we can only really see under the abdomen. But how about one of the Thrip species (Thysanoptera) ? Possibly Odontothrips ulicis or something similar.

Next time it will be up to Mark to clearly photograph everything in the scene.
