Cricket - Another day practising the game

Four hours in the sun hoping to get that magic shot (just like the batsmen) and the culling to the trash bin has been simplified thanks to a tip in one of my 'how to take photographs books'

No 1 - 1/1600, f/5.6, ISO200, 390mm


No 2 - 1/1000, f/5.6, ISO720, 370mm


No 3 - 1/1000, f/5.6, ISO250, 370mm



Well I'll allow myself one exception to the rule.

Great shots, particularly the 2nd and 4th. Somehow the shots with the ball seem to work better. Be good to see if you could get one with the bat striking the ball....well if you've got four hours, what else is there to do ?? Oh yes, I forgot, beer..............

As an aside, when I see a cricket game, it reminds me of Kerry Packer (yes, that ex-mogul). He completely revamp the game to make it faster because he was bored at how slow it used to be played in the old time...

Thanks Kaye, at first I thought the ball being in frame was a must but then I read that the priority is to have the subjects face and hopefully with a good expression showing with the action. Evidently viewers are only interested in recognising the subject?

That appears to be the most difficult shot to get because so far I only have one that comes near. I tried timing by the sound but soon remembered of course there's a delay in what you hear

Geoff, I suppose it's like any sport it's easy to rattle off the general shots but it's only the action that counts. Trouble is the amount of action shots ends up being a pretty low percentage.

Hi Izzie, yep they are the winners in this group and if only they had a better background. I have also found an advantage in getting down low so I sat on the grass for those two but I must take a cushion

I used to think cricket was slow and never really followed it when I was younger but even at the low level of it here it seems to move pretty fast.

Oh lucky you. Your ball on bat shot is good, although the batsman does look like it is a bit of a effort !! The only time I have really tried anything like this I put my camera onto continual shooting and ended up taking 1000 photos in around an hour. Then had the laborios task of sorting through them for any good ones....I never finished the task !!

Graham, those are, as we have come to expect from you, great images. That makes it difficult to
offer constructive C&C, but, IMHO...in spite of the same camera settings, the changing light is causing
some color/exposure shifting, #2 looks perfect on my monitor while #3 is a little overexposed and has
the resulting different colors. Were I a betting man...I'm thinking intermittent clouds.

Aside from that, compositionally, I like #2 the best...the juxtaposition of the bat's direction gives
great conflict in the image.
