Canon deal: Nikon buffs can ignore

I normally wouldn't post things like this, but it seems like a good enough deal that some folks may be interested. If you are thinking about a Canon APS-C body, Canon is running a special on refurbished 7D (generation 1) bodies, 27% off, $700 US (http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/ca...al-slr-cameras). I don't know what the price would be on the other side of the pond. I suspect they are clearing some out because of the 7DII. It's a remarkably good deal, IMHO. I just ordered one.

That is a darn good price on a camera which is still a very viable choice for DSLR photography. I shoot with two of them and have been doing so for years...

Mine arrives today. Can't wait. Even though I have a 5d3, I prefer a crop for bugs and distant subjects like wildlife, and the 7D is a big step up from my old 50D.

You will not be disapointed Dan, I bought mine second hand from Ebay about a year ago, it is a great camera!

Think I should mention that if refurb isn't your thing, B&H has a similar price on a new 7D body ($750). However, it being Passover, you'll have to wait a week before it ships.

Given a choice between new and refurb, I will always choose the refurb even when the price differential is not that great. Just a quirk of mine because I have never had problems with the four refurbished DSLR cameras I have purchased but, have needed to return the first two (new) Canon DSLR cameras (10D and 350D) for servicing within the first 90 days. I suspect that, if my experience is any guide, that the quality control of refurbs is better than the QC on the Canon assembly line...

However, I am equally sure than many of you (probably most of you) have had no problems with the new cameras you have purchased!

Yup, I found the BH price for new ones while taking a break for lunch. Because B&H doesn't have to charge tax in my state and Canon does, the price is nearly identical. My first reaction was that I was a dolt not to have looked, but my second reaction was similar to Richard's: on average, it probably makes no difference, and a refurb may actually be a bit less likely to have problems. In case, it's done--it arrives tomorrow (I thought today).

Given all of this, it seems likely that Canon is trying to clear out the rest of the stock of 7D1s. The 7D2 looks like a spectacular camera, but given what I will use it for, I don't think it is worth an extra $1000 to me.

Dan, didn't you know... DSLR cameras automatically stop working on midnight of the day that the new model is introduced

At least that is what some folks seem to think. I don't doubt that the 7DII may be superior to the 7D but, like you - the difference is not worth a thousand or more dollars to me. I also have really enjoyed shooting with a pair of identical cameras rather than two similar but, different models...

Perhaps down the road, I might find a 7DII on the refurbished list and may pick one up. Until then, I am quite happy with my two (refurbished) 7D classics!

yup, much to my surprise, my 50D works exactly the same now as it did when I bought it 6 years ago. As I was packing it up to sell it, I dug out the receipt: $1450. It's quite remarkable that in constant dollars, you can now buy the 7DII, new, for not much more ($1699 at B&H). It's a bit like computers were a few years ago.
