    Flowers in B&W

I don't have a raw file for this image because it is an old one. I wanted to give it a go in B&W as my goal is to improve my skills in B&W these days. That's why I didn't upload the color version for comparison.

I used a different conversion technique for the image. I created a fill adjustment layer with solid black on top of the coloured BG layer and then I changed the blending mode from normal to color on this layer. My book says this is a good conversion tecnique if you have very bright and dark ares in the original image. The original color image has some brights and darks in it but not that much really and I also did a little more PP after conversion.

    C&C appreciated as always

Nice composition and conversion. Could you post the original; not to see if color is better; but to see the effects of lighting. It looks as if this image was taken midday and depending on the colors of the flowers high contrast lighting can show great detail. I'm also wondering if the conversion could be achieved through other means. The flowers to the left have a nice 3-dimensional quality.

Very nice Binnur, there is a lovely range of tones in there! And the composition is good.

Binnur, this is very nice. I like the overall effect of it and it keeps me coming back to look again because it is different from what we normally see.

As far as conversions go, you did it, but I so prefer seeing the color of flowers rather than good black and white conversions.

Uhmm.....I am going to go against the flow as this does nothing for me. It's too pink and white rather than black and white for me. Sorry !!!

Hi Kaye It is a B&W image with one of the tints in SEP2, but I can understand that it may not be for everyone's taste.

PS. The tint I used is not pink though. It is a kind of copper tone.

The flowers to the left absorb light very well, the lighter color flowers add a nice contrast and it worked well in the conversion.

My immediate impression of the monochrome image was that the flowers on the right lacked the detail of the flowers on the left. Not knowing anything about flowers, I didn't know why that was so but I did know that the photo would have been more successful for me if the flowers on the right had displayed more detail. Then I saw the color photo and realized that, indeed, a lot of tonal variation in those flowers displayed in color is lost in the monochrome version.

Not to get hung up on what we call a particular color, but the frame you used appears to be pinkish to me whereas the predominant tones in the image appear more like copper tones to me. Even if you used a color picker in the image to select the color used in the frame, that difference can happen because of the psychological impact of using a single color throughout the entire frame as opposed to a variety of colors displayed in the image. I wonder if the pinkish tone of the frame causes some people to think the rest of the image also has pinkish tones. Regardless, I think you can find a color to use in the frame that does a better job of complementing the image.

I think it is quite an amazing conversion, Binnur, and a nice - looking one, but agree with Mike that an aspect that's hard to show is often the fine, lovely detail on bright petals. Often this detail is subtle in brightness difference and hue, and tough to keep hold of through a B&W conversion. I've got no easy answers - just sympathy.

    Interesting technique Binnur.
It seems to work well if you have a suitable picture. I like the way this came out.

    Re: Flowers in B&W

Thanks for looking and commenting Mike When I read your comment , I immediately went back to my file to see at what stage of my edit I lost the details on white flowers. And amazingly I saw that I lost those details at first stage of my conversion (converting to B&W). Then, I tried to convert the original to B&W with a B&W adjustment layer in PS instead of the different technique I applied, no good results again I was only able to get very little detail with a green filter. May be I should have edited the image with SEP 2 and bring out the details selectively there.

I have a question. My original image is a JPG file, not a raw file. Do yuu think I lost so much information while converting because I was already editing a JPG file with less information?

And I have another question. If you didn't see the color one you wouldn't know if there were any details in the white flowers or not, they might have been pure white anyway. So, why did you look for details in the white flowers at first sight?

Thanks for warning about the frame, I really didn't notice that it was pinkish because I was in a hurry this morning, I can fix it easily
